Heh... it's neither. A rutter is an old word meaning something like a sea manual. It's talked about in Shogun a lot (a fine, fine book btw).
A rutter was used by pilots (ship pilots) to guide them on long sea journeys, containing daily observations and all kinds of useful bits of info to help navigate between places and stay alive. I think they were more valuable and more reliable than maps, back in those days maps sucked and they hadn't figured out the longitude measurement issue back then either.

As he's not getting stressed by it, I suggest you follow his approach. There's a limit to what you can do if he hasn't left instructions. So don't worry too much!
