I always wonder if the pursuit of knowledge is even worth it. Sure, we gather a greater understanding of the world and reality that we live in, but is that really needed. I guess a lot of it would come down to a persons spirituality and when and how they define eternity and life ( Read more... )

Simplicity and Moderation are two of my favorite things, I think. A lot of religious folks try to live with those two things as driving motivation, but I honestly think that unless you shake things up a little, that kind of lifestyle can get really boring.

You'd like Aristotle. Or wait... maybe it was Plato? The one with anamnesis as a theory is the one you would like, maybe.

What's anamnesis? It's basically the idea that our souls are immortal, and that we've more or less been kind of reincarnated. Throughout life we don't really learn, but we instead get reminded of stuff that we knew in previous lives and had forgotten in the process of being reborn, (Or like, something)

Anyway, that's the gist of it that I got from Plato. I could be totally getting the wrong idea, but that's what I sort-of understood at least.

And the lethargy returns! Aaah!

Yes, it was indeed Plato that had the anamnesis theory. Years of thinking about it (had taken a class on it a few years ago) and I am still unable to put any faith behind that way of thinking. To believe that when I am writing something new for the first time and understanding something new, it is only me remembering what I already knew to begin with is just makes me feel like it is just another way to justify death or simplify what a soul really is. I know that isn't entirely true or the intention of the theory as a whole but that's the feeling I've always gotten.

I, being usually scientific in my ways of thinking, still believe there are no such things as souls. They are just a creation of fiction that our mind creates to lessen the blow of death. Totally just my take on it all as I will only really know when the time comes.
