So, we went to see Deep Breath at the theatre last night -- a little silly, to pay money to watch a show that we could have seen online two days earlier for free, but it was awfully cool on the big screen.
I have some thoughts. They're a little disjointed still, so please bear with me!
I agree with the assessment regarding Matt Smith's appearance taking things back a bit, although like you I understand why they did it ("really folks! Matt Smith thinks he's great too!) And I'd have left it out although it was cool to see something set up by Doctor 11 play out for Doctor 12. And of course it made me soppy.
But, really, while I loved the banter back and forth between Clara and the Doctor on their relationship....
The Doctor: "I'm not your boyfriend." Clara: "I never thought you were." The Doctor: "I never said it was your mistake."
... Clara's relationship with the Doctor seemed the most platonic since Donna. Which I really liked. I don't like that they are now making a romantic one (or that she couldn't possibly romance this older-seeming Doctor). Come to thing of it, given that she's seen every one of his past regenerations, and been in the same room with 10 and 8.5, her bewilderment at the new model plays wrong.
