"Chrome." Mukuro's voice was gentle as he shook the sleeping girl leaning against his side.
Chrome stirred and sat up slowly, rubbing the sleep from her eye as she looked around blearily, trying to adjust to the light. "What is it, Mukuro-sama?"
"We're here."
Mukuro hopped off the back of the wagon they had been hitch-hiking in - strange as it was - his ponytail whipping out behind him as he landed. He held out a hand to Chrome and helped her off the wagon before he thanked the wagon driver briefly and headed into the cover of the trees.
Chrome yawned as they walked, looking around at the greenery rather sleepily still. She knew of the place where they were going, but not about it.
"Come, dear Chrome." Mukuro murmured as they reached what looked to be a ruin of a building, the husk of it overgrown by vegetation and lived in by a number of animals previously. Chrome paused for a moment in the bright sunlight, now alert and scanning over the building, trying to imagine how it would have been, unlike the quiet peacefulness it seemed to exude now.
Seemed.
There was more to the eye about that place. That she knew.
Mukuro paused as well before he entered the husk, a wry smile on his face. This is where he had gained his freedom. He was almost surprised the blood still did not stain the ground, but reason told him the rain would have undoubtedly washed it away a long time ago.
He would have liked that reminder though.
Mukuro shook his head and continued on. It was not nostalgia that brought him back, he still hated the place as he ever did, but he was here on a mission after all, even as futile as it may seem. He wondered if Ken and Chikusa would have been a better choice for his partners - as stated by Vongola regulations, one had to have backup - but he knew neither of them wanted to lay eyes on this desolate place ever again.
He glanced back at Chrome lazily who was still surveying the walls wide-eyed as she followed.
"Mukuro-sama. So this is...?"
Mukuro smiled, a hard and possibly bitter look in his eyes. "That's right."
He bent down to what looked like a battered and heavily scratched safe on the floor littered with debris. It was miraculous the safe was still intact and well, safe, but then again, maybe not. Although this indicated it would perhaps be harder to get into...
Or not.
A few well aimed attacks at the inert metal box and the door came off easily. Mukuro pulled the documents out of the safe with half a mind to destroy them, but resisted, narrowing his mismatched eyes as he poured over the contents.
Sighing, he crumpled the documents into his pocket and got to his feet.
"Come on, Chrome. Let us leave this place."
Chrome glanced at the safe and back to Mukuro as he began to walk away without a last glance at the place where, it seemed, everything started. Slaughtering his 'captors', if you could call them that, seeking out a new life for himself and Ken and Chikusa.
Well, it was all history.
Chrome glimpsed something as she turned to leave, and bent down slowly to pull the object out of the dark corner of the safe. It looked to be a small blue jewel, and although Chrome did not really understand what it was, she recognised it seemed to be of importance and slipped it into her pocket.
Then she turned and ran to catch up with Mukuro, who was striding away from his past, and towards his future.
And hers.

Ok, yes it is slightly a chore to churn out a fic every day, and I started this fic with the idea of perhaps trying my hand at 6996, but nothing really came out of it. Still, I'm doing this to challenge myself, so.. ike!
I'm not totally sure any of them are in character either, but I do believe that's how Mukuro likes to act around Chrome. >.>
