Family

Ken and Chikusa were not much in the habit of waiting for Chrome. Even told she was Mukuro (or his vessel at any rate), they seemed indifferent and perhaps a little uncaring. But the truth was, they felt daunted. Always following behind Mukuro, they were used to this way of life, happy to be the followers of their saviour, respecting him, admiring him and his almost infinitive power.

They were glad to hand their bodies over to his possession. It was a way of paying him back.

But with this young, shy girl with the wide eye, she resembled Mukuro in no way apart from the imitation of his signature hairstyle. She followed behind them, clutching Mukuro's precious trident and they were thrown for a loop.

Who were they to follow now?

It seemed as though they wandered aimlessly like sheep, so they eventually returned to Kokuyo, the only place they had ever had the daring to call 'home' - they would never call that filthy prison such a thing and where else had they really known? Ken or Chikusa routinely went out to fetch - or steal, rather, for they didn't really have any money - food, although it was obvious Chikusa usually did a better job with his quiet manners and neat appearance. He didn't draw as much attention and was able to quickly steal away.

Ken and Chikusa for the most part appeared to ignore Chrome, providing her with food, water, blankets if she needed them, but never addressed her directly or invited her anywhere either when they ambled off to get food or simply find a patch of sun to relax in. Even so, neither ever complained when she joined them of her own accord.

Chrome knew of their awkwardness so she didn't mind. She was awkward herself and understood the conflicted feelings the two boys hid. They were her only family now, so she made an effort, guessing correctly that their silence were not snubs at her, but merely a sign of their insecurity. They weren't bad people, just unused to society.

Now as Chrome waited in the dark Kokuyo room, she thought of Ken and Chikusa. Her family. Where were they? Well she would wait, no matter how long it took. The thought that perhaps they could have abandoned her never crossed her mind - or it did cross, but she knew that they would eventually return, fearing the wrath of Mukuro if Chrome was hurt if nothing else.

She thought of the boy she had met as she waited. Sawada Tsunayoshi, was that his name? Unwittingly, she had joined a family, ready to stretch out her roots and shelve her insecurities for the time being, as well as help Mukuro-sama in the best way she could. She hadn't been very successful, but she had tried. Still she was hesitant. Would this family accept her?

Allow her to stay?

Her parents had abandoned her.

Her family at the moment was at least something she was sure of. She was needed, was important, even as she might not know how long her importance would last. She had faith in Mukuro-sama.

She didn't want to be discarded again.

Not really edited. =_= I feel like there's a sudden shift from Ken and Chikusa to Chrome as well, but I'm not too sure how to fix that. >_> I didn't want to leave off Chrome's bit. This is kind of set around when Chrome first appears in TYL, but I didn't check back or anything so this is going off memories. I've only read the manga once. =_= Yes. I'm a bad fan.
This fic has no pairings? O_O I don't want to be cliche and call it Famiglia though. >.>
