The only thought which filled his mind was that he had betrayed them.
They had been betrayed.
He stalked through the forest, murderous intent rolling off him in waves. He was furious and he didn't care who knew it - when did he care? - and Kusakabe knew better than to ask. He and the members of the Foundation kept close behind him, yet ensured they were out of his hitting range as they surrounded the small structure hidden between the trees.
"Come out." Hibari's voice was authorative as he issued the order.
Silence lingered for a minute.
"Either come out, or I will go in there and bite you to death." Hibari snarled.
"Oya, oya. Why so crude?"
A figure unfurled himself, not from the house but seemingly from mid air. They'd all been trapped in his illusion the minute they had arrived.
Hibari's eyes were like daggers even as he appeared to look evenly at the relaxed man. "I presume you know the reason I am here."
Mukuro smiled, and closed his eyes. "No. Why are you here?"
"You, are suspected of leaking confidential information regarding the Vongola's plans to the enemy." Hibari replied, his expression showing doubt that it could be possible for Mukuro to not know the reason he was there.
Mukuro opened his mismatched eyes and looked across their distance again, eyes cool.
"'Suspect' means you don't have any proof." Mukuro replied in his maddening nonchalant manner.
"I have an eyewitness." Hibari replied, tonfas appearing and gathering violet flame. "You can either return with us quietly, or I will defeat you and drag you back."
"There is no love lost between us, Kyoya, is there?" Mukuro asked sadly, a smile still hovering on his face as he sighed theatrically.
"Personal matters should not come into this." Hibari replied evenly. "Now state your choice or I will initiate battle."
"Have I ever come without a fight?" Mukuro asked with a smirk as the air seemed to ripple and Kusakabe and his men jumped backwards as a mass of plants appeared, crushing men to the ground although no one was killed, but effectively disabled. Mukuro appeared to have vanished as Kusakabe fought to free himself of the vine, slashing with a small dagger he had kept in a small sheath strapped to his arm.
Hibari was still staring at the same spot evenly though, untouched by the greenery, his tonfas ready with sharp spikes protruding along its steel length. He jumped forward to attack and it seemed he was taking part in a one-man show as he swung his violet-flaming tonfas in random directions.
Or.... at an invisible person?
It dawned on Kusakabe that Hibari must have been able to break through the illusion, but Mukuro had not even employed any of his true techniques yet.
Mukuro's mouth twisted humourlessly as he looked across at the skylark.
Strongest, huh.
Well Mukuro would have to make do with disabling Hibari today. 'Make do', he thought wryly. But it was not like he wanted to kill Hibari either. His hand was merely being forced. The fact that Hibari refused to acknowledge their relationship pained him, but he had predicted this. All was going according to plan.
Mukuro used several of his realms, numbers appearing and fading from his right eye, but Hibari managed to catch up both times as Mukuro slipped away. The skylark was persistant. It seemed there was no other option.
He stopped suddenly, long hair whipping around with the sudden loss of momentum, and Hibari thudded to the ground behind him as Mukuro turned and they squared off. Mukuro smiled at Hibari although it was tinged with a little sadness.
"I love you, Kyoya."
For an instant he caught sight of the slight flicker of confusion in Hibari's eyes at his tone.
Then he possessed Hibari.
Hibari had been marked by his trident plenty of times now, so it was perfectly possible for Mukuro to do this, but he had not tried since Kokuyo all those years ago. It seemed a little strange looking at himself from Kyoya's eyes and Mukuro wondered what he - Hibari - saw, but Mukuro could not read Hibari's thoughts.
Mukuro walked over to the prone figure slowly and kissed him gently on the mouth, even though Hibari would never know about or remember it.
"Goodbye, Kyoya."
Mukuro turned abruptly on his heel and left through the trees. He only released Hibari once he knew he was too far away to track. He had doomed their relationship now, more than once, but it was for the better.
Yes, this was the way it had to be...

I actually had something like this in mind for a different fic, so hopefully that fic doesn't end up like a carbon copy of this one. Still I suppose they would react differently.
I wondered if I should continue this, not only betrayal, but sacrifice. ..... lots of dark themes, hm?
