I have to believe that animal research labs get a certain amount of applications that are just animal rights extremists thinking they're all clever and going to take the place down from the inside.
Take the rats! Take the rats! If nothing else, you'll get the warmfuzzies of ensuring for yourself that at least some research animals are well-treated, or material for your own giant anti-animal-research crusade.
Ya, I guess they do need to be somewhat concerned. I am pretty sure that the worst thing that happens to the mice is that they have a bit of blood taken and tail tips removed for DNA tests. And they put them down humanely when they need to. However, they asked me what I would do if I dropped a cage of mice... I answered with the question "why does that happen often?" *both eyebrows raised*. They said "it happens." So I answered "I would feel REALLY bad and then tell someone". I guess with 10 000 cages, accidents happen.
