Waking up

Oct 27, 2009 19:10

George yawned sleepily. He thought they'd lowered his dose of painkillers, from the aches and pains, as well as the fact he could stay awake long than a minute or two. God, he wished he could go back. He was resolutely not thinking yet. He wished he had something to help him not think, but they wouldn't bring him anything. It was making him cranky.

After his conversation with Winona, and then Sam, Bones finally left his office and headed back to where Kirk was laying. He didn't know what was going to happen once Winona stepped back into the room, the same room as George and Kirk.

Quiet until he was right next to Kirk's biobed, Bones pulled a chair close. "How you feeling this morning?" he asked, looking carefully at him.

Kirk looked to Bones and licked his lips before writing, Exhausted. Itchy. Grumpy. Sounds like you most of the time. He tried to joke, not wanting to let the thoughts in his head spill out.

"Welcome to my world," Bones smiled back at him. "Next you'll be hitting me with one of these," Bones laughed, thumbing a hypospray laying on a tray next to Kirk's medical bed.

He did look a lot better. Reaching out to touch his hair, Bones leaned in closer. "Miss you," he whispered. There was so much he wanted to tell Kirk, about all the shit that was going on with his mother, his daughter, his double... but all Kirk needed was to get the fuck better.

Kirk mimed jabbing the air with a hypo and a menacing look. It worked disturbingly well with the tattoos framing his face. The grin made some of it go away though.

He reached up and slid his fingers into Bones' hair, putting him close so their foreheads touched. Didn't need to say a thing.

So close to him like this, Bones dropped his face a little lower and brushed their lips together. "Soon," he said, answering many unspoken questions with that one word. When would Kirk be allowed to leave. When would Kirk be back at work. When would Bones get that writing off Kirk's skin. How long until they could be together...

Maybe it was years without a caring touch other then his brother's when he was young that made him crave touching Bones as a small sign of his affection. Not just Bones, he touched people to show it, but with Bones... different. He kept their faces close, smelling liquor on Bones' breath, the smell of him, the small brush of their lips.

He knew something had happened but not what in Bones' office. He knew Winona had yelled at Bones. He... he didn't want to fight with his mother. He didn't want to hurt her or yell at her.. he just didn't want to deal with her. He had lived his whole life without her except for a few young memories, he could keep doing it.

"Your dad's doing great," he said, sitting back, turning to look over at George, resting again. Sam and Winona still out of sight. "Both of you are really improving quickly."

Ignoring the Winona situation, he focused on Sam. "Your brother, he was really worried about you two. Interesting fellow..."

Kirk grabbed the padd again, writing quickly, He told me you two have been butting heads but getting along. It was hard to wake up Ge--.

He stopped, looked down, and rubbed out the 'Ge' and wrote, Dad.

"Fucking stubborn bastard," Bones said, glancing in the direction of where Sam and Winona were arguing. "But... reminds me of your dad in some ways. It got better, there, toward the end."

He leaned in close, not wanting to share these words with anyone else. "But I miss you, Jim. Need you. So much to talk to you about," he said, closing his eyes with a sigh.

If he could have curled up in the bed with Kirk, right now, in the middle of the day, he would have. No one else would understand but the man next to him.

If he had known, Kirk would have asked Bones why the hell he wasn't curled up there right now. He brushed his fingers over Bones' cheek, then dropped them so he could write. He wasn't doing anything with his left. I'll always listen, The stylus stopped, then, baby. He smirked just a little bit.

Bones read the words and smiled, then looked up at Kirk, eyes full of a dark sadness and worry. He shook his head, biting his lower lip. "Can't talk about it here, not right now," he said, looking around. Too many people around... "But I'll be back later, we can talk when everyone is gone, I promise."

Promise? Kirk write with a strong punch of the dot under the question mark, lifting his gaze and looking seriously to Bones. That look in his friend's eyes... broke his heart.

"Cross my heart," Bones nodded his head, reaching out for Kirk's left hand. He lifted it gently, held it in his own, looking down at it. Still fucking hurt, could tell from how Kirk wasn't using it, like a dove with a broken wing. He gave it a little kiss then tucked it back on top of Kirk's body.

Wasn't gonna talk about it now, not while people were wandering in and out of their room to talk to him and George. But he wanted Kirk to know that he knew something was wrong, and that he'd fix it as best he could. "Got to go take care of some business, then I'll be back later to talk about the rest of your recuperating, you and your dad."

Kirk closed his eyes when the kiss touched his hand. The fingers flexed slightly, making his hiss. Sore straight down to the bone.

Recuperating. He didn't really want to think about that. He'd deal with the tattoos and his hand and he'd be fine. Had to be, if he wanted to stay Captain. Wanted... to stay James Kirk. So he just nodded a little, knowing Bones was worried as hell.

Bones stood, leaning in to kiss Kirk's head again. "I don't want to leave you here if she's coming back," he whispered in Kirk's ear. "Don't want you to get upset. If it gets bad, get the medics to call me and I'll... I dunno, I'll think of something, okay?" he told him, looking straight in Kirk's eyes.

...Those eyes. They cut right through him every time, sometimes good, sometimes bad. Kirk made a small face and just wrote, Could you move me now so we skip it? If he had to be in this hell, he didn't want to be sitting in the same room listening to his mother and father.
