Envy raised her eyebrow at the caller ID. This was not a number that tended to get a lot of random-seeming calls.

She picked up anyway. Call it random curiosity.

Her greeting was cool and professional. "Hello?"

"Goddamn Spock, pointy eared bastard," Jim growled, not hearing her voice just yet. "Fucking Starfleet, fuck everything!"

That last word was shouted. Loudly.

"... Jim?"

That would've been a pleasant surprise if he hadn't made her pull the phone away from her ear for a second.

"Don't shout at me."

[kirked]

That was a voice that wasn't his voice. Jim stared at the hot wired computer and smacked a palm against the pod.

"Natalie? Natalie, can you hear me? Am I hallucinating?" he asked hurriedly but not as loudly as he'd just shouted.

"What?"

Look, at what time did anyone ever teach Cara phone etiquette? Especially when the only people who ever rang were wrong numbers and occasionally Surreal whose number this definitely wasn't.

"No one ever listens to me!" Jim said, not having figured out that someone was on the other line yet. "You suck. You suck! It's cold here, goddammmit!"

Somehow, Cara wasn't as surprised by this as she thought she should be.

"What did you do now, Jim?"

[kirked]

"What?"

Staring at the computer, Jim tried to think if he'd heard someone else's voice or his own.

"Is someone there?"

[makemyownway]

"I'll get you the karking credits, stop harassing me about it!" a decidedly stressed sounding Cade yelled into his comlink.

"I don't want karking credits, I want off this planet!" Jim answered without even realizing he was doing so. "Wait, what? What?"

[makemyownway]

"Wait what what?" Cade replied nonsensically. "...Kirk?"

[kirked]

"Don't call me that," Jim said automatically. "Cade? Cade, is that you? Holy shit, how did I manage to get you of all people on the line?"
