i've been meaning to bring up the idea of an artofvision poll like we did last year, but this is better, because it's more fleshed out (i'll probably still bring it up at some point)...
also, i've spent the past two weeks watching the first two seasons of that new battlestar gallactica series, and i wanted to suggest that you give it a look if you haven't already... it's good for many of the same reasons as children of men-- and not simply as an allegory of current political situations (which it is, with much more screen time to delve pretty deep, too), but also because of its striking, hand-held camerawork... they seem like two peas in the pod of the cultural zeitgiest, i think...
(also, i can't imagine how you found the departed to be more fun than casino royale, but whatever, i liked both... heh heh...)
Thanks for recommending Battlestar Galactica. I haven't seen any of it yet and hadn't set my sights on it, but I'll definitely do so now. Maybe I'll start it once I'm done with Star Trek (which I think I'm about halfway through at this point).
As for Casino Royale, I liked it too, but unlike The Departed, Casino Royale didn't have the same replay value to me. After I saw The Departed I kept going over scenes again in my head and chuckling after the fact at how much I enjoyed them. I also liked Nicholson, which is probably a big help. On the other hand, the Bond movie just sort of evaporated after it was over, even though I enjoyed it while it was on. But it's worth pointing out that given how rotten I felt about the Bond character going in, the fact I enjoyed it at all is pretty amazing to me.
I'm also really glad to see this. These days I just don't have time for bad movies. Unless they're so bad they're good movies, or enjoyable but bad movies, but that's so hard to judge until it's too late. It's just easier to stick with flat-out good movies. Armed with my updated list, I must visit the video store soon.
I'm glad to help. I just hope you can actually find the ones you want to see in the video store. I should also add that given your experience with fairy tales and some differences of opinion I've had with other people, I would absolutely love to know what you think of Pan's Labyrinth once you get a chance to see it.
