*hugs* damn kirk, you and i really have too much in common. if you need anything, lemme know. I know there's loads of societal rules against guys and emotion and all that ... but fuck society, so if you need an ear/shoulder/convo ... lemme know g, i'm here.
i understand how you feel. when my aunt passed away unexpectedly, i was crushed. but what tore me apart more than anything was seeing my grandparents grieving for thier daughter, and my dad missing his sister, and my uncle, her husband, sobbing. same thing when my grandfather died. i miss him terribly, and i cried for me, but i cried even more for my father, and my grandmother, and my aunts, because i can't even imagine losing a parent or sibling. the good that did come out of these losses is that my dad's side of the family, which has never been very close, is a lot more connected now. everyone makes a concious effort to stay in touch, and let others know that you care about them. i suppose that's all we can really do in this world.
