Things had gone... interestingly the night of the party. The small memory put a smile to Kirk's face, despite his complete boredom and annoyance at still being trapped in his room. He could leave, he could walk around, but there was nothing he could do. Damn CMO's orders ( Read more... )

Em stood outside of Jim's quarters and took a deep breath. Lenny was right. Moving on was hard but she had to do it. And if he believed she was strong enough, then...She pressed the chime.

Kirk looked up, blinking slightly. He climbed up to his feet, then walked over to the comm beside the door and leaned on it. "Who is it?"

"It's...It's Emma McCoy." she called back. "I wanted to chat, is that all right?"

"Sure." Kirk had the door open and stepped back, going towards his closet to pull on a shirt. It showed the tattoos down his spine.

Em nervously stepped into the room. Keep your nerves, Emmy. He's just Lenny's boyfriend. "How are you feeling?" she offered.

"...alright, ma'am." Kirk slipped, watching her with what seemed almost as many nerves as she was feeling. "Yourself?"

"I'm...still trying to put together my life." She fiddled with her hands. "Captain, I don't want to be apart from my son. But...I'm not a part of Starfleet. Never was. Is there a way for me to earn my keep on the ship? I can't just...sit around."

Well, at least she got right to the point. "Well, what were you doing before you got on the ship?" He asked, because he didn't know a damn thing about her.

She sighed heavily. "Well...I got my doctorates in anthropology just before Lenny..." She winced. "Er...Leonard was born. Specializing in osteology. I did my undergraduate work in bioengineering and my research was heavily in prosthetic and and bone marrow regeneration." She rolled her eyes. "My brother and his husband kept trying to call me Bones because of my post-doctorate work."

"I don't think I'll ever get used to 'Lenny'." But the last part just made him laugh, "You know what I call him, right?" He grinned brightly, "Been calling him Bones since like, the second or third time he and I ever meet."

Em had to laugh at that. "Oh the irony...Winston would probably laugh his ass off if he knew." She wrapped her arms around herself. "If you want...I can see if I could fish a CV or resume from the university's database. I taught at the University of Georgia."

"You don't have to." Kirk gestured a little, "I think I can trust you telling me the truth."

He leaned forward, meeting her eyes, "Mrs. McCoy... what would you like to be doing?"

She looked at him in the eye. "I...I don't know, captain. I know I just want to be there for my boys. And since they're both on this ship. I'd like to be able to stay with 'em."

Kirk rubbed his forehead slowly, trying to think. "I'm willing to let you stay on, ma'am. You said... prosthetics and bone narrow regen?" He tilted his head. "Sounds useful down in med."

"Well my research was in both. I never got to finish the bone marrow regeneration project. Death kind of stops you from doing that." She gave him a wry grin and considered what other marketable skills she had. "I'm a pretty easy-going person. Managed not to ruffle anyone at the party. And I really shouldn't stay in medical all the time. That's Lenny's..." She closed her eyes. "Leonard's domain."

"Leo." Kirk offered. "Len." Trying to give suggestions that might make it easier for her then 'Leonard'. "I don't think anyone familiar with him has ever called him Leonard for any length of time without him getting grumpy." Kirk grinned a little more.

Emma McCoy, it seemed, was just one very easy going woman. She was beautiful, no doubt, and surprisingly sweet. (Still Bones' mom. Fuck, that still made him cautious around her.)

"Could you continue that research? I don't think its an area anyone's gotten into, or at least I've never heard anything on the subject. I doubt any of your research got deleted and we have an Admiral on board who could access your old research if they've been that buried by time."
