[Rifts in the Boredom of Forced Sick Leave] -- [Open]

Things had gone... interestingly the night of the party. The small memory put a smile to Kirk's face, despite his complete boredom and annoyance at still being trapped in his room. He could leave, he could walk around, but there was nothing he could do. Damn CMO's orders ( Read more... )

Joanna pressed the chime on Jim's quarters, two sandwiches in hand that she'd managed to get before the lunch rush. She knew the replicators could have made almost as good sandwiches but they were only almost as good. Not as good, and she was really just killing time anyway. This ship was so slow, quiet. It was weird. She wasn't entirely sure what to make of it, but at least this way she'd be able to talk to someone who know what was what.

Kirk got to his feet with a groan. Was it 'come find Jim Kirk' day and someone forgot to inform him? He glanced over his shoulder at the hypo Bones had left him in case the pain from his stiffness got too bad, but decided quickly against it.

There was a comfort in it being there, though.

He walked over to the comm and thumbed the button, "Who is it?"

"Joanna," Jo responded. "I come bearing food. You busy?"

"Nah." The door opened, and Kirk stepped back from it. "Come on in, Jo."

Joanna walked in, looking around curiously. "Just sandwiches. My appetite's been shit lately with everything."

It was a mixture of his stuff and Bones', a little messy but not terribly so. "I could probably stand to eat anyway." He offered a tiny smile, not really sure what to do about this complete stranger. He gestured towards the desk.

"Okay I have no clue what I'm doing here but I figure this can't end in complete disaster probably unless it just blows up in our faces but that mostly happens in the science bay anyway," Joanna put the food on the desk. "And we're not in science we're in your quarters and it doesn't look like you take science experiments home with you so we're probably good there so umm...hi. I'm Joanna Kathleen McCoy, ensign aboard the USS Enterprise from some future alternate universe."

Kirk just stared at her, blinked again, then cautiously nodded, "Hi." He said after a few seconds. He eyed the sandwich, and was partly surprised to see it was his favorite. "Huh." He tilted his head - potato chips inside the bread and all.

"That was my pa...Jim's favorite," Joanna explained. "I hope it's good. Sorry...I picked up babbling when I'm nervous somewhere."

"...s'mine too." Kirk agreed. He frowned a little at Joanna. "So talk to me. Bones hasn't told me much."

"Which do you want first?" Joanna asked, picking at the bread. "Personal, professional, what happened at the end?"

"Most important stuff first." Kirk said, leaning back and taking a bite of his sandwich.

"Earth imploded about two minutes after Daddy transported the both of us up onto the Enterprise. I think Jim was on the Narada at that point...anyway Jim and Spock and Admiral Pike transported back a bit later," Joanna shrugged. "Don't know what happened after that, Daddy forgot me in the transporter room in the rush. Well, I know but I wasn't present for it."

It didn't fully make sense to him. He wondered what happened just before that. Had that Bones forced that Jim to let him transport down? Or.. what? So the same thing had happened... on the Narada. Too late.

He looked down at his hand. Vulcan... Earth would have been there too.

"Spent a year not talking. Used a padd a lot that year...still have to remind myself to keep talking sometimes," Joanna said. "Eventually started. Jim was Uncle Jim by the end of that year...he and Daddy didn't get together until I was about twelve or so. Started calling him Papa about thirteen/fourteen. He'd earned it plenty before then. He only once used his Papa status to kick my ass. I deserved it though."

"Graduated high school at fifteen. The Romulans and Klingons were really eatin' away out our borders by then. Enterprise was one of the last holdouts on the Exploration front, rather than the not-so-neutral territory."

He knew a lot about not talking, now. He didn't even know what made him start again. "..So the Klingons and Romulans took advantage." He muttered quietly. He couldn't even handle the other parts. He wasn't, and would never be, a Papa. He liked Dad better anyway.
