After the night with Bones, to say James T. Kirk felt like shit was an understatement. He felt hurt, and angry, and confused, and all over the place all at once. It made for... well ( Read more... )

Although she'd been on the Enterprise for some days now, Helen still hadn't actually met its commanding officer. While Dr. McCoy had been perfectly cordial and very helpful in getting her settled in, she still wanted to meet the captain herself. It was, after all, only polite and professional to introduce herself. And apart from that - she knew James T. Kirk's story as well as anyone else in Starfleet. Who wouldn't be curious?

She'd sent a message a few days earlier, setting up a meeting - she only hoped he remembered, and that nothing more urgent had come up in the meantime. Helen approached the door to Kirk's office and pressed the buzzer.

Kirk looked up from the assignment he was reading, brows up. He thought back through his calender but couldn't think of anything, but wasn't real surprised if he had missed something. Usually someone sent him a comm... He waved his own thoughts away, "Enter." He called out, sitting back in his chair.

When the woman entered, it shocked him that he had no idea who this was. He knew all the faces of people on his ship (even if he had trouble with names, sometimes...) and to see someone he didn't know was a surprise. "Hello Ms...?"

"Doctor," she corrected, and smiled, holding out her hand. "Helen Noel. I'm the psychiatrist sent from Starfleet Medical - I sent you a message a few days ago, arranging this meeting?"

He was young, she thought, looking at him. She knew his birthdate as well as everyone else in Starfleet, of course. But the history text hadn't mentioned how blue his eyes were.

She wondered how well he was handling all the pressure. How well anyone could, let alone someone with so little command experience.

...Hell. She probably had. He put on his best smile and took her hand, shaking it firmly with a bit of a flirt to his expression, "It's nice to finally meet you." It was easy to keep down how much he hated shrinks.

"What can I help you with? It's been... saying busy is an understatement." He smirked, just slightly.

He had a dazzling smile, as well, but she could tell he was hiding something behind it. It was as if a shield had snapped up as soon as she'd said the word psychiatrist.

She was wise enough not to comment on it, or show that she'd noticed anything. She shook his hand before pulling a chair up before his desk and making herself comfortable.

"I imagine so. The reports from the Enterprise have been causing quite a stir back home, Captain. At least, among those of us who believe them."

"Those reports are why I'm here," she continued. "Dr. McCoy contacted Admiral Petrovich a few weeks ago, requesting the aid of a full-time psychiatrist on staff. To help the displaced adjust to life here, should they need it - and also to offer any assistance required to the native crew."

"Good. I know Bones has been almost overwhelmed... he's a doctor, not a fully trained psychiatrist. Plus its a whole crew against him." He smirked a little, knowing Bones was... exhausted. "Do you need anything? I'm pretty sure along the way I received something about you getting an office set up. Is there anything else?"

"An office would be appreciated, if you have the space," Helen said, smiling gratefully. "I've been using my quarters, but I'm sure I'll want a wider divide between my personal and professional environments at some point ( ... )

Very few people, Kirk could count them on one hand, knew the full story of what happened on the Narada and ever would. It wasn't the kind of story he wanted anyone else to know. People knew he'd been tortured, it was hard to keep that a secret, but... the full extent, and the rescue... would remain silent. Hell, not even Bones... Spock... now that he thought about it, probably only four people in the entire universe knew the whole story. Himself, George, and the two Romulans.

"I'll do my best, with a matter of restriction. There's stuff you just wouldn't be privy to on the ship, matter of security and clearance."

It wasn't the answer she had hoped for, but it was one she could understand and accept. She nodded.

"Thank you, Captain. I appreciate your honesty."

She stood, smiling.

"I'm sure you're busy - I won't take up any more of your time." She smiled, and held out her hand. "Thank you for meeting with me, Captain. I'm sure we'll be in touch."

He took her hand and shook it politely, "I'm sure we will be. Let me know if you need anything, and I'll send word to you as soon as I can about a good office space. I'll try to keep it near sickbay, seems the best place for it." He gave her that warm smile again, then sat back as his mind already tried to think where they could fit her.

Helen returned the handshake, and slipped out of the room, leaving Kirk to his thoughts.
