[NVC Day 14, Early Morning] -- [And So the Sun Rises] -- [Open to All]

Apr 29, 2010 10:16

After a long night at the theater, meeting Spock and his brother, and everything afterwards, it had been difficult to sleep. Along with the tickets, Jim had received a message about the trial's start the next morning. He had refused to let it bother him all night, just wanting to enjoy some time with Bones despite everything they had been forced to ( Read more... )

George came up a bit later. He'd snuggled lazily in bed as long as he could, but he didn't bother trying to go to sleep. What with everything going on with the trial he could feel the nightmares chomping at the bit to come visit. So, he'd sleep when he'd physically exhausted himself and catnap. For now, since he'd spotted his son, he'd go say hi.

"Hey kiddo." He didn't touch Jim until Jim could see him in the peripheral, and then only rested a hand on his shoulder. If his reactions were sketchy, Jim's probably were to, and he didn't feel like wrestling this morning.

"I will," George corrected. "We've managed before. We'll meet up on leaves, when our schedules can connect. We just maximize what time we have together."

"It's not...about being together all the time. Both of use knew even back then that we'd probably not be together always. Back then it would have been me taking you boys to meet them wherever the leaves took them, rather than Chris meeting up with me." He shook his head.

"Marriage for us is shouting to the world that we belong to each other, officially, nothing is going to ever get between us. We belong to each other." He laughed softly. "So much for being a linguist." He sounded like an idiot.

"...Don't think you need to get married to do that." Jim shrugged. He didn't have a lot to say on the subject.

"For it to be true between us?" George said. "No."

"To claim each other in the eyes of everyone else, to say 'fuck yes, this is my mate and I'm taking it legal? Yeah, weddings help. Actually...I was hoping that we'd tie the knot on the Enterprise, have you officiate. Of course, that means you're going to have to give Chris and me your blessing..."

Jim held up a hand. "I've never, ever been against you and Pike. Of course you have my blessing. I just don't see the need to be so public about it. People can tell when you're together without having to cry it out."

"True," George nodded. "But legalistically it makes more sense. If we'd been married, back when I died? He would have gotten partial custody of you automatically, had rights to you and Sammy."

"We don't have kid-kids anymore, but there's still stuff that legally matters to us being married."

"Whatever makes you happy, Dad." Jim said, meaning it. If it made George happy, he could do what he liked. They were adults.

"Honestly? I'm still kinda thrilled about the being alive again thing, and getting to know you guys," George said meaningfully. He squeezed Jim's shoulder. "Second chances aren't usually handed out and I got one. And you don't seem to resent me too much for having to get myself killed."

"Why would I resent you? You did what you had to do. Might of when I was younger, didn't understand." Jim shrugged a shoulder. "I'd like to I've grown up some."

"Because you're only human?" George said. "I would have resented the hell out of my Dad if he went off and died and left me to a shitty-ass stepfather and an absentee mother."

"Well, I don't." Jim's voice was blunter than he meant it to come out. The good mood Scotty and Pasha had left him in was shot completely, and it was getting late. "George, I need to go wake up Bones before I go to the trial." He slid off the wall, looking to his father. "Are you coming, to the trial?"

"Of course," George answered. "I've got to testify, you've got to testify, and I believe Chris is testifying too. He did write this dissertation I've heard about and get tortured too. Claims he was rescued by some young punk." George kept his tone light. Light would be good until this whole thing was absolutely over with. "I even got my dress uniform all neatly tailored. I'll be there every day."

Jim honestly didn't know what to say to that. He gave his father a look for a second, then just nodded. "...See you there." It felt like somehow, somewhere, there was something he had missed about his father. He gave a slight smile, a wave of two fingers, and went to go wake up Bones.
