[NVC Day 27] -- [Open Office] -- [Open to All]

Jun 03, 2010 09:25

With the sentencing over, the Enterprise would soon be leaving Sha'Kwai and returning to its original mission. By this point, Jim was ready for it. He wanted off the planet, his wanderlust getting the better of it. It was the longest stretch of time he had spent in once place minus his years at the Academy - always moving, always traveling, wanting ( Read more... )

Tina didn't bother to send a reply to Kirk's message. She was already dressed, and getting out of her room sounded nice. The Captain had said his door was open, and it clearly was, but she stopped and knocked on the frame anyway, to let him know that she was there.

Jim barely heard the knock on the front door, more than thirty feet away, but he turned when he thought he heard something faint and smiled to see Tina. God damn she was huge. He kept that from his smile and instead walked over to her. "Tina, good to see you. Looking gorgeous, as always." He couldn't help the small flirt in his voice.

Tina smiled. "I appreciate you not using the word 'glowing.'" She took the opportunity to look him over. He seemed tired, but more relaxed than he'd been the last few times she'd seen him from a distance as they all wandered the city. Hopefully, he'd have some time to recover some more of his equilibrium before going back to full-time duty.

She glanced past him to the deck. "Is that the promised almost-lemonade I see?"

"Sure is. ...Glowing?" He didn't entirely understand the concept of that. He gestured with his head back towards the deck, leading the way back out to the deck, flopping down into his chair before pouring them each a glass. "It's really good stuff. A hint sour, a hint sweet... good." He nudged the glass in her direction.

Tina waved her hand dismissively. "It's a pregnancy hormone thing. Personally, I don't see it, but other people apparently do. Ask your CMO, for example."

She accepted a glass of the fruit juice and took a seat. "So. My transfer. Was there anything specific you wanted to talk about?"

"I'll have to ask Bones about it," Jim murmured thoughtfully, leaning back in his seat. "Nothing specific. Just wanted to get to talk to you before it happened. How do you feel about it? Starbase 69... big assignment."

"Well, it's no Enterprise..." Tina smiled. "But I think it's the best possible option for me, now that that's off the table. It should be a really good fit with my current skill set, and close enough to the cutting edge with research that I'll be able to continue with professional development."

"Started reading up on the base once I read your transfer. They're going on some sort of belief that where the base is is some sort of anomaly? Seems damn intriguing. It'd be the kind of thing people would kill to get assigned to." Jim smiled back. "So are they starting you immediately, or waiting until she or he is born?" He gestured at her stomach.

"Yes, I think the research will be fascinating, and it should attract some bright minds." Tina touched her stomach. "She. I'll be working a standard shift schedule until delivery, and then I'll probably have a month and a half or so entirely off, then go to a part-time schedule for a while. It'll be nearly a year before the base is fully operational, and minimal personnel will mean more flexibility in scheduling for me and the rest of the nursing staff."

There would be fewer people than there were on board the Enterprise, in fact, for at least the first six months. And probably a lower rate of injury, since away missions wouldn't be a factor.

"Think you'll stay there?" Seemed like having a kid limited the possibilities in life. No deep-space ship allowed children on board. "You have a name for her? She taking your last name?" Only out of curiosity if there'd be another Kirk running around.

"Darcy. She'll be Darcy Kirk Chapel. With Kirk as her middle name, not hyphenated. So she can choose whether or not she wants to use it." Tina shrugged. "And I suspect we'll be there for the foreseeable future, yes. It's a good placement, and there will be other families."

Sometimes, Jim just didn't understand the things people chose. Like how he'd ended up with Tiberius for a middle name, but at least it was a male name. Kirk was a male name. It boggled him, but then again it wasn't his kid. Bizarre.

"Well, I'm glad to hear it. I have a sneaking suspicion Bones wants to get there and check out the facilities for himself. Partly to make sure it isn't better than the Enterprise and make sure its acceptable for you." He teased, grinning.

Tina grinned back. "I'd say I'm sure the facilities are better than those on the Enterprise, just by virtue of being newer, and benefiting from our own field-testing, but really there's no comparison between a stationary medical facility and a starship sickbay."

There kind of was, of course, but that was her story and she'd stick to it like glue if McCoy wanted to discuss the matter.

"I was planning on taking a transport," she added, "but if you think the Enterprise will be heading that way...?"

Jim would have defended to the death that his Lady had better facilities all around, but then again, he was captain. It was practically required of him.

He bit his lip, pulling up information on a PADD. He would have preferred dropping her off... some quick calculations, and after a minute he nodded. "Actually, I think we could swing out that way without much of a problem."

"That would be wonderful!" Tina checked her enthusiasm. "I mean, if it's not an inconvenience. But it would be nice to spend a little more time with everyone on board before I have to leave."

Jim couldn't help his grin at hearing her excitement. "You think I'm going to just let some shuttle haul my head nurse around when we can?" He put a hand over his heart. "Tina, you offend me." He put on an overly dramatic tone and expression before he laughed. "It'll only be a day, but any time is better than none. Besides, I bet everyone'll wanna check out the new base."
