[NVC Day 27] -- [Open Office] -- [Open to All]

With the sentencing over, the Enterprise would soon be leaving Sha'Kwai and returning to its original mission. By this point, Jim was ready for it. He wanted off the planet, his wanderlust getting the better of it. It was the longest stretch of time he had spent in once place minus his years at the Academy - always moving, always traveling, wanting ( Read more... )

Hank figured now was as good a time as any to see the Captain. Maybe he'd find out who his section head would be. So he dressed in regulation reds, and presented himself. "Captain Kirk?"

"Yeah. Family's been in the same town for generations," Hank grinned and stuck the picture back in his pocket. "Surrounded by them until you could just scream. We lived down the road from the family ranch, and across the way from my other Uncle. Town itself is full of generations of cousins. Sis is gonna inherit the farm from my Uncle if she keeps on being into the whole ranch thing."

"Damn, completely different than me. How come you decided to get away and join Starfleet? Needed a break?" Jim leaned on his arm, smiling.

"Momma explained very nicely I could either do something with my life or I could go work on the ranch full time," Hank explained. "However unless I made up my mind, I wouldn't be accepting any scholarships that could go to people who actually knew what they wanted. Momma is the high school history teacher and cheer-leading coach. She's really good at explaining things clearly."

"So I tried for Starfleet. Seemed the best option, can travel and figure things out. Was going to go for communications, but I met Kathy and she convinced me to go for Security."

"That's a good type of woman," Jim said, wondering what it was like. To have a mother that cared like that. That... stayed.

His eyes dropped, but only for a second before he forced himself to smile again. "Kathy? Who's that?"

"She is," Hank responded. "Couldn't ask for a better Momma. Do you ride?"

"Kath's my ex-girlfriend. She was fun. She's out on Starbase 17 right now."

"I ride like a brick at best," Jim admitted sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. "I've never been around a horse in my whole life."

"Sometime if you've nothing better to do on leave, you'll have to come out to the ranch," Hank invited. "Get you riding properly and none of that English riding shit. Real manly riding."

Jim immediately waved a hand, "no, no, and no. I don't do horses. If I'm riding, it'll be on a cycle." Somehow, the idea of being around a giant animal that could kill him pretty easily, forcing a thing in its mouth and riding on its back... not his thing.

Hank shook his head. "But how are you gonna go on a good old-fashioned trail ride on a cycle?" Not liking horses just did not make any sense to him.

"I'm going to be glad to get going, to be honest. All I've had to do down here is read, and acquire a girlfriend." Hank looked sheepish on the last part. He hadn't meant to get a girlfriend so fast.

Jim smirked. "I can go forever on highways and it'd be just as beautiful." He would defend his love of cycles to the death.

Why sheepish? "What's wrong with acquiring a girlfriend?"

"Not nearly at all," Hank shook his head firmly. "There's so much you can't see from highways. So much you can't get right up on top of. And it's harder to doze off on a motorcycle. Or make love." Not that Hank had ever done that of course...not at all.

"I didn't exactly mean to get one so soon. Just broke up with Kath when we got our assignments."

Jim held up a finger. "Not harder to do that last thing." Not that he'd ever done that, either. "Yea but a cycle needs a quarter of the maintenance."

He leaned back. "Long distance relationships... not an easy thing. Might have been better for you both." He kept his voice gentle.

"Eh, it was time," Hank shrugged. He didn't need any consolation about the old relationship. "There wasn't any future to the relationship."

"My new girlfriend is something though." He shook his head and grinned a little. He had it bad already.

"Yea?" Jim grinned at that, pleased to see that grin on Hank's face. "Tell me about her." He paused and stood up, "before that, you want a beer? Better than this juice." Indicating the pitcher with a jerk of his thumb. Not that he didn't like it - in fact he had plans to add it into his replicator if possible.

He debated for a second. Was this a test? Tell you he didn't want fooling around on the job and then offer him beer? Better play it safe than sorry. "No thank you sir. I'm good. I'm probably going to attempt to get in touch with Mr. Grimm after this."

"She's," Hank shook his head. "So beautiful I can't believe it. We met when I was out shopping for my sister. She helped me find something appropriate. My sister is great, but she's a girl. And sometimes seems like an entirely different species. I helped her with her nephew and it turned into smoothies. And then a real date. I don't kiss and tell...but the kissing is great."
