With the sentencing over, the Enterprise would soon be leaving Sha'Kwai and returning to its original mission. By this point, Jim was ready for it. He wanted off the planet, his wanderlust getting the better of it. It was the longest stretch of time he had spent in once place minus his years at the Academy - always moving, always traveling, wanting ( Read more... )

Despite her best efforts at concealing it, no observer could have failed to recognize the look on Janice Rand's face for quiet pleasure and pride as she walked through the open door and over to the Captain's desk. The famous Enterprise and its famous Captain, and Starfleet had allocated her to serve them both - any young yeoman would have been delighted.

Still, Janice tried to keep her expression at least mostly professional as she saluted the young man behind the desk. "Yeoman Janice Rand, sir, reporting for duty. I've just been detailed to the Enterprise."

Damn she was pretty, and maybe he was losing it, but that sounded incredibly suggestive. His mind was already going places it shouldn't.

"I'll keep that in mind," he said dryly, but a smile replaced it seconds later. "Right now, all I can promise is we'll see how it goes. I remember Pike telling me once about a yeoman he got that he couldn't stand, and how badly it went. But... I'm willing to give it a shot."

She broke into a smile. "I'm glad," she said, grinning. "And - well - hopefully you'll be able to stand me. I'll try to be obliging, not get in your way. Make good coffee."

Not stare at him too much. That kind of thing.

Oh, the staring thing he kind of liked. Huge ego boost. Equally, he was thinking he had to keep from checking her out too much. Just his kind of girl... in the past. Had to keep it in the past.

"And hopefully you won't want to kill me after a week of working with me." He grinned right back. "You have off until..." Quick mental calculation. "2259.111. Three days."

"I'm sure I won't want to kill you," she assured him, with a lopsided grin.

He was probably busy, she knew. Captains had lots of work to do. And right now he didn't even have anyone to help him. But she'd soon change that.

She pushed the chair back, and stood up. "In that case, sir, I guess I'll see you in three days!" She tapped her PADD. "If you need me before then, I'm around."

"Three days, Ms. Rand." He gave that beautiful smile of his. "I'll see you back up on the Enterprise." A dismissal, but a light one.

She took no offence, saluting him rakishly instead. "On the Enterprise, then, sir."

She straightened her dress pedantically and automatically, and then turned and walked out.
