(OOC: If you want to be a part of this away mission, please read the whole post including OOC comments at the end for all information, captains orders, etc.)Kirk stared down at the ice planet on the forward view screen unhappily. He didn't have the best relationships with ice planets, and the idea of going down to this one had him less than pleased ( Read more... )

Hell. No.

Bones, I'm not letting you go on this mission. Mind I remind you what happened the last time you went on an away mission to a colony in trouble?

Sorry Jim, if I fuck up like last time you have my permission to just leave my worthless ass down there.

I have my reasons for wanting to go. End of discussion.

TRANSPORTER ROOM kirktastic June 28 2010, 16:24:15 UTC
Jim had piles of warm clothing for everyone, with crewman bringing more. Gloves, snow suits, thicker boots, goggles, hats, and everything else they could bring. Jim had something special tucked into his pocket for Spock, thinking the Vulcan specifically might need them more than the others.

Also on the floor were packs and belts set with tricorders and phasers. He thought it'd be better to be prepared.

Paula secured her workstation and left immediately, glad she had opted for the practicality of the pants uniform that day. It saved her a trip back to her quarters to change. She arrived in the transporter room to find the captain waiting, along with several large piles of winter gear.

"Captain," she greeted Jim as she walked in, a warm smile flitting briefly across her face in spite of her professional tone.

"Lieutenant," Jim said, a smile coming to him as well. He gestured to the massive piles in front of him. "Get one of each pile, including the belts and packs." The packs were designed to be able to handle a few hours down on the planet and in the immense cold reported on the planet. "Don't have to start dressing until everyone's here or you'll roast."

She started with the piles of clothing, searching for the appropriate size. The rest of the gear was collected quickly enough. Paula's eyebrows rose at the heavy snowsuits and the phasers. Apparently this mission was going to be interesting. She stepped to the side with her supplies, nodding at the others as they came in.

DEBRIEFING kirktastic June 29 2010, 15:57:10 UTC
Jim looked over the people gathered in the room with him. Spock stood with Pasha, Nora, and Paula. His mind labeled them 'Team Science'. M'Kriss and Bones stood with Hank who would be their protection. They were 'Team Medics'. Jim was with two members of Security, and they'd be taking lead. Team Command, maybe ( ... )

Time to go.

Bones had waited as long as he could to put on the gear, knowing it would be hot as hell until they reached the ice cube below. "Pierce, right?" Bones asked to the security man assigned to them. If this hadn't been such a dangerous mission, Bones would have growled at Jim that he didn't need the extra body around, but he knew better. This wasn't Jim being overprotective, this was life and death.

Bones turned to M'Kriss. "You got everything you need?" Hopefully her fur would serve her better than the insulated gear they were all wearing.

M'Kriss nodded briskly, shifting uncomfortably in her clothing. "Will request of Starfleet clothing suited for dangerous purposes in more comfortable for Catian." She had only her nose and paw pads to worry about for exposed skin, so undoubtedly she had the best chances even if she was from a planet with a far warmer climate than Earth.

She looked around at everyone finishing getting dressed, and asked quietly, "are nervous?"

THE TRANSPORT SITE kirktastic June 30 2010, 20:02:09 UTC
Even through very thick layers of specially designed material against the cold, the instant that the transport finished and reality stabilized itself in Jim's mind, he felt the cold. It burned through him, a wind already tearing at him and howling its rage against an empty world. He was glad that the goggles were lightly tinted because even with them the utter blue-white of the world was blinding.

Fuck, it was cold.

Bones looked around as soon as they got their, saw Jim next to him, good. Call him stupid, but he always felt better after seeing Jim people re-materialize properly. He took a deep breath, letting it out slow and feeling it freezing in front of him. The rest of his team was next to him, and he could see his own reaction to the terrible cold mirrored on their heavily covered expressions.

"Okay guys, let's keep our eyes open." Right now, all they could do was follow Jim's orders, looking for the colonists and hope they weren't going to be needed.

Hank took in the sight in front of him and shivered through his layers slightly. He muttered softly "Wow, they went for the welcoming architecture." He adjusted the stuff to cover his mouth better, almost feeling his breath freezing inside him.

AWAY MISSION - Reseach and Living Quarters kirktastic July 8 2010, 03:00:43 UTC
Jim looked to Bones, Hank, and Tyler and gave a quick nod. "We need to check out the other areas. We go carefully." He looked to the others, giving a longer look to Spock, then walked back out the door and towards the buildings in the distance. If anyone was alive, they had to find them.

Hank had out his phaser and was shadowing Bones, as were his initial orders. He nodded towards Tyler to take point, ahead of the Captain if possible. No point getting either of their high ranking officers killed.

Tyler nodded in agreement, splitting the guarding duties equitably and headed ahead, phaser also ready. Who knew what was going on and all this ice just made things seem more...sinister. At least they were moving. He was starting to feel like he was freezing in place.

The group was moving slowly as they made their way to the other buildings. Bones couldn't imagine surviving in this environment, even indoors. Immediately he started wondering about the supplies on-board, mentally preparing in his head for advanced frostbite and other cold weather scenarios.

One eye on Jim, Bones stepped closer to him as they approached the living quarters, the doors frozen shut again. "More like they'd be at work, you think?" Bones asked. This wasn't a place you brought families. Seemed to him these colonists would be more likely at their jobs if something bad happened.

"I don't want to miss anywhere they could be," Jim said quietly, voice loud away from the wind in the doorway. He eyed them, cursed, then gestured for everyone to step back. "Hank, if you would again?" Damn this ice... "How can ice move this quickly? That shouldn't even be possible."
