He didn't have the best relationships with ice planets, and the idea of going down to this one had him less than pleased ( Read more... )

Jim had piles of warm clothing for everyone, with crewman bringing more. Gloves, snow suits, thicker boots, goggles, hats, and everything else they could bring. Jim had something special tucked into his pocket for Spock, thinking the Vulcan specifically might need them more than the others.

Also on the floor were packs and belts set with tricorders and phasers. He thought it'd be better to be prepared.

Paula secured her workstation and left immediately, glad she had opted for the practicality of the pants uniform that day. It saved her a trip back to her quarters to change. She arrived in the transporter room to find the captain waiting, along with several large piles of winter gear.

"Captain," she greeted Jim as she walked in, a warm smile flitting briefly across her face in spite of her professional tone.

"Lieutenant," Jim said, a smile coming to him as well. He gestured to the massive piles in front of him. "Get one of each pile, including the belts and packs." The packs were designed to be able to handle a few hours down on the planet and in the immense cold reported on the planet. "Don't have to start dressing until everyone's here or you'll roast."

She started with the piles of clothing, searching for the appropriate size. The rest of the gear was collected quickly enough. Paula's eyebrows rose at the heavy snowsuits and the phasers. Apparently this mission was going to be interesting. She stepped to the side with her supplies, nodding at the others as they came in.

M'Kriss wore no proper shoes, so as she studied Paula pulling a pair of boots from the pile, she was grateful to have secured her own. She had read the medical information that leader-Leonard had provided, and had one of the few contraptions she would allow on her paws.

They were a strange pair of boots, with visible claws, thick leather soles shaped almost like the pads of her feet, a hind claw for added traction, and padding to provide additional warmth and waterproofing. They had been given to her by an Admiral that had seen the state of her paws after an test mission during her second year at the Academy. While not designed specifically for the ice and more for any variety of surface that would hurt her relatively durable feet, it would suffice for now.

Paula looked the boots over, making sure they would fit before setting them aside. A quick check of her pack revealed the standard supplies for a severely cold climate. Next were the tricorder and phaser, which upon examination were found to be in perfect working order. While she was checking her gear, Paula became aware of someone approaching. As she set the belt aside, she caught sight of a rather unusual pair of boots. Looking up, she smiled and nodded.

"Hello. I'm Paula Collins."

"Hello." She offered a paw as was the human custom. "Am M'Kriss. Pleasurrre to meet you." Slowly she took in a breath, tasting the human on her tongue. A pleasant scent, feminine and very human.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, too, M'Kriss," Paula replied, shaking the offered paw. "You're in Medical?" she asked, observing the med kit slung over her shoulder.

...Was she sniffing her?

Leader-Leonard? Paula smothered a grin, smiling at M'Kriss. Suddenly she remembered that meeting with Jim, back on Sha'Kwai, and his talk of a new species coming on board. "I'm new to the ship as well - science. How do you like it so far?"

"Is acceptable. Is not home, not ground, but was needed." She gave a small grin, the edge of one fang showing. "Is good for you yes?"

She nodded, understanding completely. Serving on the Defiant hadn't been Paula's first choice, but she'd been needed and had done her job well. Being here on the Enterprise was new, but already felt like an entirely different experience because she'd wanted it and had gone after the opportunity to serve here.

"Yes, it's good," she told M'Kriss with a smile.

"Is first time in space except flight to Earth and Academy training. Always had ground to return to. Dig paws in soil." Her tail's tip went back and forth in a snapping motion. "Was surprised to see assignment. Assigned here, or ask for position?"

"I requested the transfer," Paula told her. "I was assigned to the Defiant before this." She looked at M'Kriss curiously, hoping her next question wasn't rude. "Where are you from?"

The name did not ring a bell in her mind. "Came from homeworld, Catia. Was home for seven years of life before able to come to Earth for new Starfleet."

"What's it like there?" Paula asked, interested. "Is it similar to Earth, or very different?" She couldn't recall having learned much about the planet at the Academy, other than passing references here and there.
