SICKBAY dctr_mccoy July 30 2010, 03:04:10 UTC
Bones entered Sickbay to find Geoff already working on one of the security people. He stepped over to take a look - this one was hurt bad.

"I got it," M'Benga told him, waving him off. "Go check out the other. The girls over there, they're hurt too." Bones turned, facing the bio beds, and went to look at their injuries.

Sickbay - Paula lt_paula July 30 2010, 03:35:30 UTC
She had started shivering again on the walk to Sickbay. Even now in the warmth of the ship Paula's teeth were chattering as the nurse peeled off her gear layer by layer, starting with her goggles and the remaining glove before moving on to the jacket.

M'Kriss looked between Paula and Nora and saw leader-Leonard going for Nora, so she went to Paula. She wasted no time in helping Paula get her clothing off. "Stay in lowest layer." Even as she stripped her own heavy clothing off. "Do not let hand touch other skin or table." She didn't stop until all she had on were her own lowest layers which were a pair of underwear and a tight top, then rushed to get a bowl and fill it with water.

She returned and put the bowl beside Paula. "Hand in water. Is same temperature as room, but will seem hotter. Must leave hand there."

Paula nodded, wriggling out of the remaining layers with M'Kriss' help. She shivered even more when she was finally down to her undershirt and underwear, hopping awkwardly onto the bed as M'Kriss returned.

Eyeing the bowl apprehensively, Paula braced herself, unable to hold back the cry of pain as she eased her hand into the water. She blinked back a few tears, her body trying to tell her the water was scalding hot.

M'Kriss gave a small wince of sympathy before she moved into the supply closet to get a warming blanket. She draped it around Paula's shoulders, tucking it in. She used a scanner, frowning over the results she saw. The damage was bad from such a small touch of the ice, but it would be repaired. Her white-winter cousins in the mountains of Catia had shown her how to soothe the blaze of pain in her paws when she had come and been foolish as a younger kit.

She did the same thing to distract Paula as they did for her. "Would like to hear Catia legend, keep mind off pain?"

The warmth of the blanket was a relief, her shivers lessening as she finally started to get warm. Paula held her hand in the bowl of water, watching with concern as M'Kriss frowned over the results of her scan. Tugging the blanket a little closer around her neck, she tried to hold her other arm still and let the water do its work, but it hurt.

She looked up at M'Kriss, grateful for the offer of a distraction. Her voice was a little unsteady as she replied. "Yes, please."

"Nerves in hand must start to feel again, will have to change water when cools, but is slow and will save all feeling and motion if lucky." M'Kriss believed firmly in pulling no punches.

M'Kriss started on other, smaller signs of shock as she checked Paula over. "Catia has sun and moon, like Earth. Is good legend of how they came to be. Translation is impossible, so will use Terran terms. Sun was beautiful female, with golden eyes and fur, born of her sire Earth and mother Sky. She had many litter-mates along with Wind and Rain, Cloud and Storm. Moon was also born to mother Sky and sire Earth, but one season later. He had litter-mates Stars and Comet. Was white all over with blue eyes and skinny tail. Mother Sky sent them to play across the broad back of Father Earth. Sun and Moon became good friends, played much together."

Paula listened closely to M'Kriss' explanation, nodding that she understood. It wasn't going to be pleasant, but the water was necessary, and that was all there was to it.

She was curious about her home planet, and so Paula tried to pay just as close attention to the legend as M'Kriss talked. "What happened to them?" she asked.

"Sun and Moon grew older, as cubs do. Moon grew large with his mane, he was sleek and handsome. Sun grew beautiful, the fastest hunter of her pride. They could leap higher and higher than any of their pride. Moon, though, was jealous. Sun would be carried high above Father Earth by Mother Sky, held in her breast and shining above them all. No matter how high Moon leaped, he could not make it as high as Mother Sky without her help. Father Earth grew green under Sun's beauty and warmth, hunting grew more plentiful."

"Oh..." It was a beautiful tale, not unlike some of the myths and legends about Earth. Paula shifted into a slightly more comfortable position on the biobed, listening as M'Kriss spoke while she checked her over.

"What did Moon do next?" Paula asked. It was helping, having this to focus on.

"Moon grew jealous of Sun. Why could Mother Sky not see it was unfair that Sun be carried but not him? They grew larger, with Sun walking proud on Mother Sky's broad back, but Moon grew larger still. Grew beautiful mane and muscle. So one day, Moon asked brothers Star and Comet to help. Together, the three attacked Sun. They forced her down and trapped her in a cave. The light of her beauty did not shine, and Mother Sky grew frantic when Sun could not be found."

She got up and began to change the water, doing it gently but swiftly to keep the temperature about the same.

Her hand was beginning to thaw, the reawakened nerves jangling as she tried her best to listen to M'Kriss. Paula hissed a little when the water was changed, the movement making the pain flare up. She exhaled slowly, trying to relax as much as possible.

"They attacked her? What did Mother Sky do?" She tried to imagine it, the three of them kidnapping Sun.

"Mother Sky asked Moon where was Sun? Moon lied and said he did not know. For much time, Sun could not be found. But, Father Earth grew sad, and Mother Sky grew sad, without their daughter. Moon felt terrible, and he was not being lifted to her back, realized he had to do right thing. He told Mother Sky what he had done. Mother Sky was upset, Father Earth angry. But, Mother is good for child. Father Earth wished to kill Moon for what he did, but Mother Sky would not allow. She told Father Sky he was not allowed, and spoke with her children. Together, they agreed. Since Mother Sky could not hold both of her big children, now fully grown, at one time, she would hold one half time, other half time. So half time, Sun walked her mother's road back with litter-mates Wind and Cloud. It was called daytime. Half time, Moon walked with Star and Comet, was called Night time ( ... )

"That's a lovely tale," Paula commented. She smiled a little. "Thank you for telling me." She'd like to hear more about Catia sometime.

"Okay," she said, sighing in relief as the painkiller started to take effect. She couldn't wait to be finished so she could crawl into her own bed and sleep. Maybe after a warm shower, she thought, her mind a little fuzzy. This seemed a good excuse to use some of her water allotment.

"Glad to tell. Is good to spread legends, is how they are remembered, by the telling." M'Kriss went to find the dermal abrasion and frowned to see leader-Leonard had taken it. She returned to Paula and bowed her head. "Forgive. Leader-Leonard has device needed to continue. Can offer two options." Her tail twitched behind her. "Is required abrasive surface. Can wait, or can use alternative. Tongue is roughly same texture."

Paula blinked up at M'Kriss. Her mind was more than a little cloudy from the remnants of shock combined with the painkiller, but she was fairly certain she had heard correctly. She was quiet for a minute, considering her options. Likely the device would be needed for almost everyone, so it might be a long wait. It was an unorthodox suggestion, maybe, but if it worked... she looked down at her hand.

"Go ahead," Paula replied with a nod.
