It's time to live for yourself and not for others.
That statement alone hit Aki hard. Throughout his whole life he had lived his life according to other people's wishes, and that line by his best friend had aroused a realisation so impactful it was as though Aki had blindly slammed into a brick wall while walking along a straight path.
They were 21 and Ruki had told him that over coffee. Ruki who had dried blonde hair from repetitive bleaching. Ruki who wore tattered uniforms to school splayed with false blood and held together by safety pins. Ruki who was as into visual kei as he did and the vocalist of a band he formed with his boyfriend and friends outside school. Ruki who was openly gay. Ruki who was identical to Aki on the inside, but opposite on the outside, for Ruki was true to himself through and through while Aki was not.
Aki, on the other hand, feared too much about how the world would perceive him if he revealed his true self.
Aki was one of the handfuls who had black hair throughout high school. He took up piano since young as his father told him to, though now he really wanted to drop it and take up bass seriously instead. ‘Seriously’ meant that he was already learning it on his own behind closed doors. Aki who admired multiple shiny earrings adorned by others' ears and envied his best friend but didn't dare to get one of his own. It wasn't that he was afraid of pain. No, if Ruki knew anyone who could tolerate pain more than anyone, it would be Aki without a doubt. But yet, as much as Aki wanted those metallic pieces on his body, have his hair as blonde as Ruki's and just form a band, visual kei or not, he couldn't.
In Aki's world of judgments, stereotypes and perceptions... Delinquent. Ruffian. Homo. The stakes were just too high.
The worst Aki had to overcome had to be his preference for those of the same gender. He had known it ever since the last year of middle school and it had freaked him out completely. Fortunately, or not, he had came out of the closet to Ruki who told him that he wasn't alone. That was barely true of course, as Ruki went out with any guy who approached him. And Aki? He dated girls who gave him chocolate on February 14. He hated himself for leading them on and crushing them when he broke up, but sooner was always better than later, he rationalised. Furthermore, he had a crush on a fellow classmate in high school ever since he saw him play the guitar. And every time Ruki caught Aki looking at him, he would sigh and shake his head sadly at his friend.
But, on an afternoon in spring, in a cafe where Aki met Ruki for coffee during the latter's rehearsal break, Ruki said that one line which marked a turning point in Aki's life.
Everything then came to him and fell into place like simple math. All this time he had been living day by day according to what others thought of him, followed the invisible rules, adhered his conservative-salary-man father's demands, and did basically everything that he himself had no desire to do. He wasn't being himself and living his life. He was being what others wanted him to be and living his life for them to see. But did they even notice his efforts? Or were they just waiting by the sidelines for him to screw up and mock at him for all he’s worth.
And Ruki had gotten that right long ago.
Aki hurriedly set down his cup with a loud clink, smiled widely at Ruki and thanked him who couldn't react as he had a mouthful of café au lait. He picked up his bag and dashed out of the cafe, waving to Reita who was just about to enter where he just left.
But he didn't go home. Instead, he made a mental list of things to do in his head and headed first to the punkiest and baddest-looking accessory shop he could find down a ghetto street. He had never ventured into those areas before, but Aki knew where they were as he just had to go where he avoided before. 15 minutes later, he walked out of that place with total of 14 piercings on his ears, eyebrows, lips and belly button, with an obese tattooed shopkeeper staring after him in amazement.
He waltzed next into a hair salon to bleach his hair blonde with black streaks. After which, Aki flipped open his phone and rang up his ex-classmate Shinji, spilling his pent-up emotions out to him. He held a bated breath as the anticipation of acceptance or rejection hung over the line. The next thing everyone on the streets of Shinjuku knew, a crazy blonde young man was whooping and punching his fist into the air and dancing down the zebra crossings.
Upon reaching home, he toed off his shoes and went up to his father who was reading newspapers in the dining room. Lowering the papers, his father turned to Aki with dull eyes, not noticing the stark change in his son’s appearance at all, not until Aki revealed his sexuality only did those eyes went wide and shouting which could only be compared to booms of thunder shook the entire house.
That night, Aki stayed over at Ruki's whose floor had empty bottles of beer and bento takeaways here and there, and a stray noseband peeking out from under the bed. Gently placing his bass on the ground, Aki smirked. He asked Ruki if he really was only other one sleeping there tonight and got a smack in return. Ruki also threw him a scrap piece of paper, with several numbers scribbled on it. Aki raised an eyebrow.
Contacts, Ruki said. You need this to form a band, he told Aki. Splitting into a wide grin, Aki punched his best friend's shoulder in gratitude and glanced over the messy text.
9004-3417-25 Mao
5731-0466-11 Yuuya
Folding the paper and tucking it into the back of his jeans, Aki stretched and yawned, lying down on the messy floor of Ruki's house. It had been a long day, and he had just been kicked out of his house, but well, this was a start.
A/N: I've been waiting to write a fic for another of my favourite band, SID, with Mao as the main character but Aki seemed to suit this role better so yeah ._. And here I was thinking I wouldn't be updating as papers are coming but who am I kidding >.> Aaaand, I can't be sure about Ruki's uniform, cos I vaguely remember reading that in a interview eons ago. Aki obviously has more than 14 piercings, but even 20 as a headstart seems a little too unrealistic. Yup, sorry for the long note! m(_ _)m
