Comments: Comments make me happy, like little bits of candy :3

It would be wrong to say Ruki was sly, cunning or deceptive even. He wasn't just downright manipulative - he was the epitome of it. Manipulation ran in his blood, in every cell of his system and Ruki was certain that if he ever wrote a scripture on the art of manipulation, he'd win the Nobel Prize. Heck, Japan would even build a sculpture in his honor, on a scale of 2:1 as compared to his actual height.

Ruki was used to getting what he wanted. It wasn’t easy to achieve his current prowess, but with hardcore determination, and years of cultivated hands-on, he was who he was now.

Take for instance, a math test in middle school. Ruki hated math. He abhorred math. He despised the mere existence of math. If not for math and numerical values, his height could not have been put a number to and become a “unit” for others to make fun of. To put it simply, Ruki sucked at math and if there was another thing he was good at apart from manipulating and bad English, it was rationalising everything to his logic, be it correct or not.

The coming test was vital to Ruki as he had to ace it in order to pass and move on to the next level. He might hate school, but getting retained was not acceptable at all. So Ruki tried studying. But the vulgarities in his head repelled all the digits and formulas from getting in. He grew desperate. It seemed that all hope had been lost but the next day he woke up and an idea struck him. Ruki grinned. He would be promoted to the next year after all.

When the bell rang for recess, everyone took their bento boxes out of their bags. Clattering and chattering buzzed throughout the classroom, until a soft tinking was heard at the corner of the room near where the door was.

"Ah I’m sorry," a short boy apologised softly, going down on a knee and picked up the pair of pink chopsticks. He then stood up and placed it on the hand of a bespectacled girl with pigtails, making sure that the tips of his fingers lightly brushed against hers and his eyes never left her now wide ones until her cheeks were tinted with a slight pink.

That girl was the class's top scorer and a week later Ruki had gotten a distinction for math.

Take another example, Ruki's wish to get a guitar in high school. He wanted an acoustic. A cheap guitar was easy to get, but no way would Ruki compromise on quality. If Ruki were to get a guitar, the best one it would be.

Thus begun Ruki's daily routine to the guitar shop at 3pm. For an hour, he would do nothing but gaze at the most expensive guitar on the rack. After that, he would turn around and head home. Needless to say, the middle-aged shop keeper found it strange to have a young blonde boy coming down to his shop every single day for a month to stare at that particular guitar and leave without buying anything. Hence, at Ruki's next visit he asked, "Planning to get that guitar son?"

Ruki's heart did a little victory cheer. That signaled the first step to success. "Yes sir, I've been saving up for it. When I have enough money I'll get it for sure." Ruki replied with a small smile on his face. The shop keeper grinned. "You must really like it eh? Seeing how you come down everyday just to see it. It would take you a long time to save up you know, especially for a student like you." Ruki looked down and shuffled his feet. "Yes, but I'll still save up till the day I get it. Looking at it daily reminds me of my goal, and I'm not going to lose track of it. I've already decided that music is going to be my way of life. I want to be a musician sir." The shop keeper nodded in understanding and approval, happy and awed at the young student's determination and passion for music. "All the best then young man. This guitar will always be here for you to redeem it."

Half a year later, Ruki entered the shop and finally lifted the guitar for the first time out of the clasp. However, just as he was about to reach for his wallet, his mobile rang.

"Hello?
Takamasa-kun?
Yeah what is it?
No, don't say that, c'mon you can tell me anything.
Your dad got into trouble again?
I see.
What? They messed up your house again? Urgh those bastards!
How much does he owe them?
Oh hmm I've enough with me right now.
The guitar? It's alright, your situation is much more important right now. I can always save up again another time.
Nah it's okay. What are friends for anyway. I'll see you at the usual place in 15 then."

The shopkeeper kept mum as he overheard the entire exchange between the young customer he grew fond of and his friend.

Shoving the phone back in his pocket, Ruki looked at the guitar once more and sighed before returning it to the rack. Casting it one last glance, he rounded and headed for the exit.

"Hey!"

Ruki turned back, slight disappointment still written all over his face.

The shop keeper was standing in front of the counter and holding out that guitar in his hands.

"Here take it son. You may not have the means now but I believe you deserve it. Your love for music will bring you a long way."

Ruki gasped. "No sir! I can't accept it! It's too expensive and I can't pay you right now! I'll come back again next time!"

"No. I insist. You can repay me by creating good music, and I can see that you have strong potential. Just take it. I'm more than happy to give it to someone who deserves it." The shop keeper smiled, shoving the guitar into Ruki's hands.

And so Ruki walked out of that shop victorious, petting the rectangular bulge in his pocket, grinning in satisfaction that his customised alarm ring tone rang according to schedule.

Time and meticulous planning are the 2 crucial roles in attaining your goals. And Ruki's current goal is the bassist of their band, who was over at the far end of the couch gaming intensely away on the DS.

The door clicked open, and their leader walked in carrying in a huge pile of papers. Reita perked up, and smiled at the drummer before returning to the game. After that though, a soft oof was heard, and Kai was on the ground with papers scattered everywhere. Almost as soon as it happened, Reita tossed his DS to the side and swooped over, worry and concern etched on his face as he helped Kai gather his papers and apologised for not helping him when he saw him enter. Kai laughed and ruffled Reita's hair, asking him what the hell he was apologising for. The bassist grinned at the contact, and held out his hand to help Kai up.

Ruki crossed his arms and frowned. He puffed out his cheeks and pouted when Kai looked over and smirked. Damn Kai and his "accident"!

It was week 6 and Ruki's attempts weren't working.

"Hey Rei! Let's play MonHunt!" Ruki chirped, dropping his weight next to Reita's on the couch. Reita paused his game and lifted a brow. "You? MonHunt? You don't even have a DS or like gaming!" "Eh no that's not entirely true I-" Ruki fumbled to explain but just then the door flung open and Kai came in with an even brighter smile than usual. Ruki's eyes narrowed. He smelled something cheesy. Eh what what?!

"Reita! I baked a cheesecaaaaake! Come try it!" Kai sang as he placed the box on the coffee table in front of the bassist. Reita's eyes sparkled and he dumped his gaming device, hands reaching out to eagerly open it. Ruki rolled his eyes. Kai whipped out a plastic fork from nowhere and scooped off a corner of the cake. "Here!" Kai held out the fork right before Reita's lips. "Th-thanks Kai." He mumbled, his face now a deep shade of red as he accepted the treat. "It's really good!" Kai grinned, "Really? I spent the whole morning on it! You can have the whole thing!"

Figurative smoke came out of Ruki's ears as he fumed. "But you hate Kai's cooking! You always said it's too sweet for your liking!"

"Cheesecake isn't sweet." Kai said simply.

"Yeah it isn't. And I don't hate his cooking." Reita replied, stuffing more cake into his mouth.

Ruki's eyebrow twitched.

1-0

Kai might have won this round, but Ruki isn't going down so easily.

Or so he thought. The following weeks showed no improvement at all. Reita simply adored the other and couldn't see Ruki's attempts or Ruki at all.

Week 15

They were in the middle of practice when a loud snap caused Ruki's voice to come to an abrupt halt. Everyone turned around. "Sorry guys" apologised Kai abashedly, holding up a badly broken drumstick. "It's okay! I'll get another one for you!" Reita piped in immediately, brisk walking to the other side of the studio where their equipment were kept. Aoi shrugged, Uruha looked quizzically at his best friend while Ruki sighed inwardly.

It was a losing battle.

Kai called for a break and exited the studio, with Reita tottering merrily after him. Aoi left for a smoke and Ruki made his way over to the couch, then dumped himself there feeling depressed. He picked up his pen and begun drawing random doodles on his notebook, black ink subconsciously forming outlines of a certain drummer getting chewed by Chihuahuas. Ruki sighed aloud as he contemplated on giving up for once. Kai was his friend after all. However, his train of thought got interrupted.

"Want a coffee? You look tired."

Ruki looked up, Uruha was sitting on the armrest of the couch and holding a can of coffee out to him.

He mumbled a 'thanks' and received it. 'Mochaccino' it read. What odd unheard flavor was this? However Ruki shrugged and felt a tinge better by Uruha's thoughtful gesture.

"You know, sometimes we try too hard for something that we lose sight of others around us." said the voice next to Ruki.

Ruki turned, tilting his head as he replayed Uruha's words carefully.

"Think about what I said. I believe you'd understand what I mean Ruki. I think you don't have to try so hard to get it as compared to what you've been doing recently." Uruha said, tipping up the can to empty the rest of its contents into his mouth before grinning at Ruki and left the room.

Ruki let out a short laugh and he smirked. Uruha had to be the first one to see through him. He opened the can of coffee, and took a tentative sip, nodding as he decided that it didn't taste so bad. He peered over to the door where Uruha left again, returned his gaze to the can and took a big gulp of his drink. Ruki nodded affirmatively. Yes, he could give this a shot after all.
