He swung open the door, hearing the creaking hinges echo into the darkness. He stepped in, hearing his footsteps resonating against the emptiness of their apartment, no, his apartment, for the only other occupant that moved in 2 years ago had moved out.

Reita sighed. He missed coming home to the sweet smell of chocolate muffins baking, and to be greeted by the all too warm and cheery smile. He missed it. He missed him.

Kicking off his shoes, Reita moved to the wall and flicked on the lights, displaying a disarray of clothes and takeaway trash strewn all over the living room. Coffee stains patched the couch and cigarette butts littered the floor like confetti, except that this was no celebration at all.

Stop smoking! It’s totally bad for your health and haven’t you promised to quit!?

Reita’s eyes widened, he spun around, only to see no one behind him. There it was again, his voice.

It wasn’t working. He drowned himself in work, he went out with his friends, he even reluctantly allowed his friends to set him up on blind dates, but none worked. His reports were crap, he always ended up drunk and would only realize it when he woke up the next morning with a horrid hangover, and he couldn’t bring himself to even go and meet the mysterious stranger.

Reita sighed again. He ran his hand down his face and decided to at least wash up before turning in to another lonely night, to wake up to another day with no one next to him.

He set down his briefcase and slowly dragged his feet towards his room, when he heard a click. Panic ran through his veins and he perked up, head turning to the direction of where the sound came from: his bedroom.

Had his house been robbed? There was nothing much to steal anyway. His tv was old and he didn’t own any fancy watches or whatsoever. What about his passport? Someone could steal it, tweak it a little and commit heinous crimes with it. Oh god... He would be doomed. Forget being a solitary depressed person for the rest of his life, Reita would be spending his remaining years in jail for deeds he didn’t do.

These jumbled thoughts went through his mind as he advanced towards his room, a thin glimmer of light pouring through from the door ajar.

When he at last stood in front of his room, he closed his eyes and slowly pushed the door open, calmly bracing himself for what awaited him. A burglar? A corpse with a knife in the chest lying on his bed with bloodstained sheets? He chuckled sadly at himself, finding himself amused at these nonsensical thoughts he was able to conjure up despite not able to feel or think clearly since what seemed like forever.

The door opened, and Reita opened his eyes, mouth opening in a silent “o” as what he saw was the last thing he’d expected to see. There was no burglar, no bloody corpse, no sign of anything being taken even. What lay before his eyes was Kai, sitting stock still on the bed, and staring down at his feet.

Reita’s mind went pointblank. He felt himself move forward towards the figure on the bed, then he kneeled down, and wrapped his arms around him. Then he prayed. He prayed that he wouldn’t be pushed away, that he wouldn’t be told to leave and be gone from his sight again. He tightened his grip around Kai, squeezed his eyes shut and prayed.

“I missed you.”

A teardrop blotted his shoulder. A nod followed after, and Kai’s arms embraced him back.
