White shards all around me continued to fall. Cars next to the sidewalk continued to zoom by, each of them, each of the drivers and passengers inside must be rushing back to the comfort of their homes, each of them must have someone awaiting them inside.
As I stood here soaked in the rain, another flash of lightning boomed overhead and I thought to myself, could this be any more dramatic?
The blonde figure in front of me retreated further as I remained rooted to the ground. His familiar back view was disappearing, obscured by the pelting rain, and enhanced by him walking away.
Whoever’s above must be mocking me.
I knew it was futile to reach out my hand. He wouldn’t see it, and I couldn’t feel it. My limbs were numb; paralysed by the cold and the increasing distance between us both.
Only my mind was sane.
Stay. That word resonated in my head.
Stay. That word hovered on the tip of my tongue.
Stay! That word escaped my lips.
But rain, they ceased for no one. It created an opaque wall between us.
It could have been my imagination, but he paused and turned for a microsecond, before hugging his coat tighter around him and disappeared into the grayish blur.
That could have been a mirage, but as reality started to sink in, just like how the chill from the water from above sunk into my clothes and into the core of my bones, what hadn’t disappear was my share of rain cascading down from my eyes.
