“Why do you do that?”

“Do what?” replied Kai, grimacing as he replaced the cup of espresso onto the saucer.

“Drink coffee.” Reita deadpanned. “You obviously hate it!”

Kai saved the draft he was working on before the man sitting in front of him caused his train of thought to crash and burn. He tried his utmost to keep his eyelid from twitching and temple from pulsing. Closing the laptop shut, Kai rearranged the papers strewn around the small table and stacked them neatly next to the drink.

“That’s because it helps me stay awake. Caffeine?”

“But didn’t you say tea has a higher level of caffeine than coffee?”

Kai sighed. “Yes, but I don’t want to drink tea all the time! Besides, walking to and fro from the kitchen and study is tiring too.”

Reita frowned. “Tiring?”

“Yes. Because someone here doesn’t know how to make tea, and because I’m the leader of this band, I’ve to sacrifice late nights and mornings and thus my intake of tea is astronomically high. Multiply 3 cups of tea by the hours I’m awake and calculate the distance I have to cover per day. Is it not tiring?”

Reita flinched. He twiddled his thumbs. Well, it wasn’t his fault he didn’t know how to boil water, much less make tea. It also wasn’t his fault tea bags were suicide bombers in disguise whenever he tried to open one and dunk it in hot water for Kai. It wasn’t his fault at all! Reita grumbled and slouched back onto the chair.

The drummer sighed again and looked around the café. There was hardly anyone at this hour and he was thankful for it. He didn’t need any more distractions. The bassist’s presence alone was too much to bear. He casted Reita a sidelong glance, and gulped at the sight the outline of his lean muscles through the thin shirt he threw on after Kai’s hasty declaration that he was heading to the café two streets down.

His train of thought was in flames, and Kai wished the grey fumes would chase his lewd thoughts away.

At that appropriate juncture, Reita just had to smirk that smirk of his Kai knew all too well.

Kai gulped again. What now?

“I know how to keep you awake all night.” Reita said. “You don’t even have to drink tea, much less coffee.”

Kai squirmed on his seat. “Reita, if I can read your mind, I don’t think what you’re suggesting is really appropriate at all.”

“Why not?”

The bassist leaned forward. His v-neck shirt hung low, exposing more flesh beneath collarbones and Kai found himself staring at the coffee maker behind Reita’s ear. Uruha had told him that if you want look like you’re making eye contact when you’re not, that’s what you should do. That was how he had managed to “pay attention” during meetings with their manager all these years.

It seemed to be working, and Kai reminded himself to thank Uruha for the tip afterwards. That is, if he managed to get out of this café without looking any different than he did when he entered.

“Are you trying that Uruha thing? ‘Cause it’s not working on me.”

Kai nearly fell out of his seat. “What!? How did you know!”

“Of course I do,” replied Reita wryly, “I taught him that in High School. How else do you think Uruha actually managed to graduate.”

Letting out a nervous chuckle, Kai scratched the back of his head. Now he had nowhere to look and no rebuttals to refute. It wasn’t like he rejected Reita’s proposal, but he really had to get some work done before the next day.

“Okay, let me finish this and the rest of the things up before we go home. Just keep quiet for now.” Kai ordered, before taking another swig of the bitter concoction.

He scowled again and the extreme bitterness caused his eyes to tear up. Fuck coffee!

Blinking and wiping his eyes with the back of his hands, Kai sniffed and started to shuffle the papers in order. He had to reread everything again because of the bassist.

However, Reita spoke.

He snatched away the stack of documents and stashed them into the drummer’s bag. Grabbing the laptop, he pushed back his chair and stood up.

“That’s enough. I can’t stand seeing you make that face without any reaction going on down there. Now you know why I hate watching you drink coffee because how am I supposed to remain sane when you scowl like that. Screw coffee, screw work, we’re going home now and I’m giving you something better to taste.”

Kai blinked.

“And I promise you, you won’t be able to sleep tonight, and tomorrow night, and the night after that.”

With that, the pair left the café, and the little lukewarm cup of expresso turned cold.

A/N: Planted my coffee characteristics onto Kai’s character. Btw, the ear trick works. My friend taught me that :p
