Synopsis: Aoi and Shou have split personality disorder. What happens when parts of themselves hate and love one of the other, when the main individuals themselves are not aware of their other identities?

Life in the city was certainly something else from the countryside. It bustled in the day and came to life at night. It was an interesting change, and Aoi liked it. He enrolled himself in an average high school and unbeknownst to him, the first 2 years flew by. All too soon, Aoi was in his senior year.

His mother had also secured a job as a secretary in a large corporation. The pay was decent and it provided food on the table. Though life was mundane, she couldn't ask for more. Aoi was content as well.

What probably threw his life out of proportion a little was the semi-annual checkup at the institution. It bothered him greatly as he had to travel all the way to Nikko where the secluded hospital was. However, the staff there was always warm and inviting so Aoi couldn't complain.

"Did your head hurt anywhere? Did you have any nightmares or weird dreams?"

It was the standard questions followed by the standard procedure all the time, and Aoi always had the same answer to everything. Except this time.

"No - wait. I think I had a pretty odd dream a few nights ago."

The hand that was penning a trail of illegible scribbles stopped. "Would you like to share?"

Aoi nodded, frowning as he tried to recollect.

"I was in a room of some sort. It smelled really bad, which is weird right? Because we can't feel or smell in our dreams. But anyway, it was a rather dim room, and there were lockers everywhere. I think I was at a corner because I couldn't see much. There were shadows all around me. I woke up soaked in sweat after that."

The doctor set down his pen and remained silent for awhile, leaving Aoi hanging.

"I see. Well, that's probably nothing much to worry about, I'll prescribe you some sleeping pills so you can sleep better at night and not be plagued by any such dreams in future. That would be all Shiroyama-kun."

A little perplexed, Aoi thanked him and left the room. As he closed the door, he stopped in his tracks when his eyes met a pair of larger ones.

"Shiroyama-kun?"

Aoi stuttered. He didn't recall meeting the person who just called his name before, yet he was stunned. He couldn't decide if he was more taken aback by a stranger knowing him or by the appearance of the stranger.

He was clad in what all the other patients wore; Aoi's daily wear a couple of years ago. Yet, what stood out was not his pale skin against dark hair, but the pair of eyes which complimented his oval face perfectly. Every inch of that person spelled that he was one of those who has been ill their whole lives, that the most sunlight he could get was when he sat next to a window reading a book during therapy, that his parch white skin, marked with a couple of plasters on his arm, showed tests and treatment carried out on him for probably almost his entire life. Yet, despite all those signs of a trapped lifeless being, his eyes were large and bright, pools of asphalt which shone with hope and a burning passion to live.

Aoi was rooted to the ground.

"Shiroyama-kun?" The stranger repeated, snapping him out of his senses,

"Y-yes? I don't mean to be rude but do I know you?"

The stranger laughed and smiled. Aoi spun around then. He was sure he didn't see any wind chimes on his way in, but he was certain he just heard them. Ah, there it was again! Whirling back to the same spot, Aoi realized that it came from the stranger who was laughing, his eyes twinkling even brighter than before.

"Nope, you don't know me. But I know you, I saw you when you enter this place. And you were unconscious so you couldn't have met me."

The tinkling of the wind chimes came again.

"It's good to see that you seem to be doing pretty well now."

Aoi could only smile and scratch the back of his head. Why was he embarrassed? He never had a problem with meeting new people before.

"Oh! I'm Shou! Sorry for the late introduction! No wonder I've been having a one-sided conversation all this while. You must have been thinking 'What kind of weirdo this guy is' right?"

The stranger named Shou chuckled and revealed a line of pearly white teeth.

"So where do you live? If you don't mind me asking, that is. I bet it's quite far off from here, since this place is in the middle of nowhere."

"Tokyo. My mum and I moved there after I got discharged from here." Aoi answered, surprising himself that his voice had returned.

"Tokyo!? You come from the city!?" Shou shouted, sparking several weird stares from those around them.

Aoi nodded and grinned abashedly.

"I've always wanted to go there! Man, I'm so jealous right now. You have to tell me all about it!" Shou said as he bounced on the balls of his feet. The next thing Aoi knew, Shou's hand was on his arm, dragging him into a room down a corridor he had never ventured down before.

The room had got to be made for Shou. Aoi had only met the other for a few minutes, but any one who met him could read his personality. The walls were bright blue, a bunch of origami nested on a stack of multicolored paper and a large white-framed window was set in the middle with translucent curtains. A tall square shelf occupied almost the entire section of one of the walls. Upon it were books, manga, and lots of notebooks. Lots and lots of notebooks.

Aoi was beyond impressed. "Wow, your family much be rich huh. To have a room like that..."

Shou grinned and shrugged. "Well I guess you could say it's something like that."

"What's with all these though?" Aoi asked, pointing to the rows of assorted notebooks.

At that, Shou perked up. "Oh those! I write in my free time. So you can guess how much free time I have huh!"

"I see... What do you write about? If I may ask, I mean, we've just met each other..." asked Aoi, suddenly feeling rude for intruding upon the other's private space though he didn't 'intrude'… Technically.

"Hmm stories, poetry and the like. I like literature, but I don't know if I'm good at it 'cause no one ever reads it or give me comments. I can't improve if it doesn't get critiqued right?"

"I can read your works for you if you allow me!" those words left Aoi's lips faster than he realized it. Damn, what was wrong with him! He couldn’t go on speaking his mind like this. What would Shou take him for!?

However, his worries were redundant.

The pair of large orbs sparkled even more. "You would!? I totally wouldn't mind! I'm so honoured!!

Aoi chortled, "No no it's really alright. I'm not an avid reader myself but I'd like to see how your works are. Oh, what are those then?"

"These?" Shou crooked his head to the side, pointing at several loose sheets of paper.

"These are songs that my friend composes. He's really good at music you know. I'd say he's born with a talent for it! Sometimes I write lyrics for him too. He'd play the melody and I'll jot down whatever comes to mind. It's fun like that." Shou smiled fondly as he looked at the direction of an acoustic guitar standing at the corner of the room.

Aoi nodded slowly, digesting the huge inflow of information since they met. "Your friend must come over really often since his guitar's here."

"Yup, of course! Only he can come and see me though, I can't go out and meet him since I'm stuck here." Shou’s voice trailed off towards the end.

"Yeah I guess being here too long makes you feel like you practically live here huh?" Aoi smiled.

But Shou looked confused. "No Shiroyama-kun, I've lived here my whole life. This institution's my home."
