The burning red seared his eyelids and he reluctantly forced his eyes open. He immediately regretted it as he did so as blinding white light slammed against his pupils. Kai hurriedly shut his eyes again and counted to three before carefully opening them and looked around the room slowly.
Pure white walls and a fluorescent white ceiling lamp were all he could see. As he turned to his left, Kai saw an open window with pale blue curtains fluttering gently in the breeze. He looked over to his right and saw a short wooden table top with a jug of water and a small vase of orchids and baby breath, and not too far away from his bed was a white door.
As he gradually adjusted to and assessed his surroundings, Kai deduced that he was in a hospital ward, but he could not figure out why he was in one. The room was pretty decent, as compared to usual hospital wards standards. Excluding the freaky squeaky white cleanliness of the room, the ward could pass off as cheery and peaceful. Kai smiled softly to himself as he glanced down to his hands on his lap. Spotting something out of the right corner of his eye, Kai perked up and saw the small vase of delicate flowers. He reached over and his fingers deftly curled around the stalk of white flowers, bringing it close to his nose and taking a small whiff. He smiled to himself. Kai had always liked baby breath. He adored its bursts of minute white petals accompanied by a light sweet fragrance.
Suddenly, as though he was struck in the back, Kai hunched forward and buried his head between his knees, dropping the flower onto the ground. His head hurt. Something inside pounded and trashed itself against his skull and it hurt, as though something held captive inside was clawing its way out. He squeezed his eyes shut and his upper teeth clamped down hard onto his lower lip, unwilling to scream and silently begging for the immense pain to disappear.
As soon as it came, it left. The blazing crimson before his eyes morphed into a hazy blur scene of a congested highway, with an endless sea of cars surrounding them.
Kai rounded to his right, to see a blonde man sitting behind a steering wheel, with a white band on his face. He was laughing and asking Kai what he wanted to have for dinner. Kai found himself laughing too, and replying that he would have whatever the blonde would like to have. The man turned to look at him with a soft smile on his face, and his left hand shifted from the wheel to the top of Kai's head, tussling his hair a little, chuckling as he did so. His touch felt warm and familiar. And Kai found that he longed for that man's touch again when his hand had retreated back to the steering wheel, focusing his attention back onto the road. He glanced over to the man again, who had a light smile on his face and was humming lowly to a song playing on the radio and tapping his fingers lightly on the wheel. Kai smiled broadly to himself and soon felt his cheeks burning up. He quickly averted his gaze to stare down at his lap, embarrassed to be caught so flustered and shy. His eyes lit up though, when he saw a bouquet of flowers resting on his lap.
Baby breath
His heart made a small leap of joy and he was just about to turn and thank the blonde man when he felt himself lurch forward violently, his head crashing against the headboard and the bouquet falling carelessly onto the ground beside his feet. His head pounded and he felt something hot and pulsing gush out from somewhere above his eye. Kai struggled and tried to focus, seeing nothing but darkness sprinkled with scarlet specks. When he seemed to have regained some control, he struggled and crooked to the right. What lay before him was the blonde man motionless with his head on the wheel, and his arms hanging limp at his sides.
The steering wheel which he was tapping on merrily just before was now drenched and dripping with crimson syrup.
Kai felt himself scream. He heard himself emit sounds he had never made before and never knew he was capable of making. He clutched at his hair and trashed about wildly on the bed. His legs scrambled and kicked the thin fleece blanket onto the floor and he couldn't see. He couldn't focus. He couldn't comprehend. He vaguely heard footsteps coming his way and elongated shadows loomed over him. Voices surrounded him, speaking rapidly in hushed whispers and Kai couldn't understand. The voices, the shadows, the vivid image of the blonde against the bloody steering wheel. His head thumped and his chest, his heart ached. He felt as though his ribs were shrinking, trapping his lungs and depriving him of air. He then felt something prodding at his arm, and before he knew it his whole body went limp.
The hushed voices left him and the shadows exited through the doors, leaving Kai alone in his room once again.
He laid motionless on the bed, staring up at the ceiling lights, not bothering to close his eyes as he felt all the white blind and burn him. Kai felt his head getting heavier, and he let it roll onto the side, his eyes unknowingly seeking the only stray item on the ground.
The discarded baby breath stalk.
Kai's eyes hurt. From not shutting it off from the brightness above, and now he could not see. His vision was blurring up again. Teardrops after another fell onto his sheets, staining the milky white to a sickly grey. He curled up, too tired to move anymore, and he cried, heart wrenching sobs echoing off the walls as he remembered.
Reita.
A/N: Churned this out last night when I couldn't sleep. Insomnia. This was really depressing to write though. I hate reading about character deaths, but yeah this turned out this way. Sorry for killing off Reita ><
