“So.”
Ruki frowned at the coffee boy who scooted up to him grinning cheekily. Their physical proximity was way closer than usual. And something was off about that grin.
“So…?” the shorter repeated as he placed the little jug of milk in the microwave.
“Don’t act all dumb with me! I caught you looking elsewhere earlier on. And yesterday. And the day before that. And-“ A small hand clapped over Kai’s mouth. Before Kai knew it, he was dragged into the kitchen where Aoi stood up holding a sack of flour, blinking his eyes in surprise.
“What are you guys doing?” Aoi asked. “And Ruki overpowered you? Wow.” The corner of his lips tugged upwards in amusement.
Kai’s pride suffered an immediate stab. “No Aoi! He merely caught me off guard that’s all. Anyway we’ve gotta help Ruki with his love life!”
The tallest out of the trio’s eyes gleamed.
Ruki groaned. This was not going to be good. How he had been found out, he had no idea. He thought he had been less obvious than Kai. Not that that mattered now since ninja and him somehow got together a week ago… Ruki had never seen this coming. And now Aoi’s involved in this… Oh god.
Just then a ting rang. Aoi spun around, shoved his hands into the pair of worn oven mitts on the counter top and pulled open the oven. He gingerly removed the hot tray and set it carefully in front of the pair who intruded the kitchen.
“How timely! This is your lifeline Ru-chan!”
Imaginary red flames ignited from the use of that suffix flared around Ruki. But it was immediately extinguished when Kai asked, “How so Aoi?”
The said person grinned and whipped out a bag of cream frosting. Wrapping his fingers around the noose, he eased out gentle swirls of cream. Then he kneeled down, shuffled between a few loose containers and picked out the last bit of decoration to adorn his masterpiece.
“That’s amazing Aoi!” exclaimed Kai who had ran over to his side of the work table.
Ruki cautiously made his way over as well. He looked worriedly at Aoi who was crossing his arms in satisfaction, and at the little cupcake which sat in the tray.
“This is too much!” He moaned.
The cheery optimist however, patted his head and said “Not at all Ru! All you have to do is give it to him! You can even say it’s on the house. No one would know... Right?” Aoi grinned and nodded.
“Anything for our dear Ru-chan’s happiness~” Aoi choked, dabbing his eyes with his apron. Kai snorted and doubled over.
“Go on now Ruki! We’re behind you!”
Ruki rolled his eyes at that literal double meaning. Kai was right. It wasn’t like he had never served cupcakes to customers before. This was gonna be a piece of cake. Cupcake.
Or so he thought. When his knees turned to jelly and his feet weighed boulders, Ruki felt his determination sublimating into thin air.
“How serious do you think he is?” Kai whispered, peeking out from the door with Aoi’s head above his.
“Hmm” Aoi pondered. “Seeing that he didn’t need much shoving, I’d say-“
“PLEASE ACCEPT THIS ON THE COURTESY OF THE HOUSE!” came a loud yell from the corner of the café where a pair of regulars always sat.
Reita sniggered. He turned around and gave Kai a wide smile which was visible to every one after Kai reduced his 10 feet long bandage to 2 feet around his nose. When he turned back, Uruha was gapping and staring at Ruki, or rather the treat in his hands. His face turned scarlet and he mumbled unintelligible thanks as he ducked his head and received the cupcake from the pale-faced waiter.
Silent snickers erupted into guffaws of laughter as the coffee boy and baker retreated back into the kitchen and slammed the doors close behind them.
“That’s very, very, very serious…” Kai concluded, pushing his weight against the doors as a thunder roll of fist hammerings exploded from their friend outside.
A/N: Since I've got nothing to do, I shall add photos to my cafe fics now. HAHA.
