“So,” Ruki asked, as he leaned back into the comfort of the plush armchair in the usual café they were in, “Why Kai?”

Reita took a sip of his cappuccino and hummed, lavishing the richness of the coffee as he pondered over his friend’s question.

Ruki crossed his legs. Impatience started to seep into his veins. No one keeps Ruki waiting after all. He mimicked a short cough, a prompt for the bassist to answer. But none came. Instead, Reita closed his eyes as a small smile graced his lips, thus edging Ruki into further annoyance.

The short vocalist ground his teeth. An answer he seeks is an answer he shall get.

“Is it because of his smile? The damn dimple that Heresy is crazy over…”

Reita opened his eyes and set down his cup on the saucer. His eyes narrowed when Ruki’s pair met his. Ruki cocked his head to the side and that movement made Reita’s lips crack into a wide grin.

Youth was a valid excuse for them to act like morons in front of the camera.

“Look!” Kai exclaimed, signature smile plastered on his face, as he pointed at his left cheek dent, “I can make this appear here,” the said index moved to the right, “but not here!” He laughed. “Isn’t that weird!?”

“Whatever man,” Reita appeared on the balcony, “I have none and that’s it,” Was what the bassist said with his manly sculpted arms crossed  in front of his chest, but the reason behind the abrupt cut of the camera film was due to him pulling the drummer back into the room for what turned into a long kiss.

Ruki frowned at the man sitting across him who was clearly in a world of his own. He leant over and snapped his fingers, jolting Reita out of his recollection. “Or is it because of his cooking?” Ruki second guessed. “The black forest log cake last month was pretty darn good…” At that, Reita snorted and Ruki perked up, large pools of amber now hopeful for an answer. But what he got in return was his friend hunched over, arms wrapped around his middle and laughing his guts out.

“AKIRA!” A loud yell came from the kitchen. Was that panic he heard? Reita jumped out of the couch and winced when his gaming console fell out of his hands and onto the floor. “Oh my god I’m so sorry Nintendo-“

“REI-TA”

Another yell. Reita gulped. He dashed into their kitchen to find Kai, pissed as hell, standing behind an exquisite log cake. His jaw fell. “And you said this is your first attempt? It’s awesome! What the hell are you so angry about?”

Vein throbbing and jaw clenched, Kai withdrew both hands from his apron and whipped the cake around, revealing half a centimeter of smudge chocolate cream.

“This.” He hissed.

“Oh.” Reita swallowed. He scratched the back of his head. “But it’s so small. No one would notice it! Besides you know how quickly the guys devour your creations… They would never know.” He hurriedly said, trying to placate the drummer.

“But it’s not perfect.” Kai groaned. “Christmas is ruined.” His flour-caked hands flew to his face and he sighed.

Reita felt his heart sink. Of course he knew how much of a perfectionist his lover was. And he knew how much effort he had put into making this cake. “Well… It’s still perfect to me.” Reita said, and Kai lowered his hands by just a notch. “If you let me, I’ll eat it all, though it means spending an extra week at the gym…” At that, Kai laughed. “And then we’ll bake another one together.”

Kai’s smile returned and the bassist’s knees habitually went weak once more. “Alright, we’ll eat it,” Kai chuckled, “but just leave the baking to me.”

“So,” Ruki asked again, “What is it?” He glared at Reita who was now half sprawled across the arm chair, his chest heaving up and now from all that laughing. But before his got his answer, a chime tinkled behind him and the subject of their one-sided conversation came in. Smiling and waving, Kai weaved through the tables and chairs as he made his way across to them. Ruki nodded in return, and turned his gaze back to his friend at the table.

Sharp teasing eyes from just a moment ago had softened into a gentle gaze as Reita watched the drummer come their way. And he spoke for time since they entered the café, “There’s no ‘because’ Ruki, I just do.”
