01 How the Mighty has fallen
Reluctantly, the Goblin King had to admit that Sarah had a roundabout way of wreaking destruction upon his kingdom - and his person.
It was not enough that she had to take his more than generous offerings and fling them right back into his face, temporarily banishing his powers in the process. It was not enough, that she had turned his loyal subjects against him, shredding his reputation as a king who was to be feared and respected for ruling his lands with Machiavellian expertise. It was not enough that through her doings, what was left of his once prosperous kingdom now lay in ruins. It was not even enough, that she had refused him her heart although she had stolen his.
Jareth lay within the ruins of what once had been his formidable kingdom; a mere shadow of what once had been a formidable king. The Underground and its ruler would remain in such state until…
Until he was summoned again; until another one would foolishly ban a precious treasure into his domain; until such fool would refuse to run the labyrinth or perish in the process - until then, the destruction brought upon him by a creature of such a cruelly gentle spirit as Sarah’s would leave the lands barren and desolate, mimicking its sovereign’s current state.
He was no fool - it would be a long time before he would be summoned again. The world of mortals had long since forgotten the Underground. Jareth and his kingdom were a myth, a tale to spook children for entertainment, no longer a warning to be headed. The banishment of Toby had been the first in a long time - even by his standards. The goblins and their king would probably survive until the next summoning, but by that time, Sarah Williams, his conqueror, would have most likely perished and he would be left behind without - a heart, a chance for revenge, a chance for redemption.
How long he lay there, starring at the auburn skies above, he could not tell. But it couldn’t have been for very long, he realized, when a familiar feeling suddenly surged through his body.
‘I wish the goblins would come and take you away - right now!’
As the snow white owl sailed grimly through the skies of the Underground, watching the lands slowly restore themselves to their former glory, Jareth conceded that maybe, not all was lost.
