We shall meet again (13 day challenge) - 05

This shouldn't have happened. But it's there and I can't come up with anything better right now. Quality is something else entirely.

05 Power

The situation in itself is rather clichéd: a grown up woman, returning to her apartment, peering through the dark in an attempt to gauge whether something or someone has invaded her living space. She thinks of countless, third rate horror movies as she wanders through her home, feeling as if she were seeing it for the first time.

“I know you’re here,” she tells the dark living room in her no-nonsense voice.

The darkness does not offer her a reply. Sighing, she flicks on the lights. A surprised shriek tears through the silence.

“I thought you said you knew I was here,” the man - spirit, dream, myth, creature - lounging on her favourite armchair says, sounding as if he struggles to recall whether she actually did say that.

“Jareth,” she bites out.

“Lotte,” he answers with only the faintest trace of bored amusement. “Are you wondering why I am here?”

“Why are you here?” she asks obligingly, once several moments of silence have passed without him elaborating.

“To discuss. Your cruelty, among other things, my dear,” the Goblin King responds.

“Is there room for your own in that discussion, Werther?” Sarah inquires calmly. Then, for good measure, she adds: “And leave Anthony out of this, will you?”

“What a curious thought… you wish to discuss my cruelty although it was you who demanded that I be cruel?” Jareth asks, leaning slightly forward.

“Perhaps we should discuss your idea of generosity, instead.”

The Goblin King laughs mirthlessly.

“You truly are cruel, Sarah. One of the cruellest creatures I have ever met. Oh no, don’t look at me like that, sweetness! Cruelty is your true nature. Wishing away a helpless little thing like Toby; forcing such sufferings on innocent bystanders of your little scene and those ‘friends’ of yours; leading me into my destruction for your amusement… I apologize if I fail to see any kindness or soft spirit in these actions,” he mocks.

“I fail to see any generosity in your actions, as well. That makes us even.” Sarah replies acidly. She wants to say ‘Leave!’, but the word won’t come.

“There is no shame in being cruel, Sarah. Personally, I think you wear it rather well.”

“Leave. I have told you before…”

“Indeed, you have. But someone here has power, Sarah. And that someone is very cruel,” he says, fading from sight slowly.

“We shall meet again”, his voice echoes ominously.
