Clorophyl, shortening photoperiod, hyperphasia and hibernation...

I've never been one to blame my problems on "clinical disorders" or such bull shit as that, but I have come to notice something in myself that makes me wonder. I am not a depressed person in general (as most everyone knows) but when winter hits, when it starts to get to be "cloudy season" (as it does way too often in Wisconsin), when I haven't seen ( Read more... )

Kirsten I think you have a really insightful entry here. It does really make one wonder about SAD and related conditions. I'm quite sure whatever depressive feelings you have you will find a way to cast them aside...As I've always said you have potential and your very resourceful!

I'm the other way around. It's the first of the BRIGHT, sunny, warm days that keep me from leaving my bed, handicapped by unbearable depression. The cloudy days, the drizzle and the nippiness are what comfort me. I don't think it's sick, it's just an obscure condition that must exist for equally obscure reasons--reasons which I couldn't name. But yeah seasonal depression...interesting topic.

I admit I didn't read the entire entry thoroughly (the text is really tiny on my laptop screen), but speaking as someone who does have SAD... Investing in a full UV-range lamp (sunlamp) is worth it a hundred times over. Especially if you're living in a dorm room or other place where you don't get much natural light.

It's good not to fall back on clinical labels all the time, but on the other hand... If there's something that's going to help you, don't be afraid to take the help.

Not full UV-range, that was a brain typo. Full-spectrum lamp or something to that effect. They're pretty easy to find, and relatively cheap.

Regarding happy sun rays... kuvutiakijinsia October 30 2006, 22:15:55 UTC
I never believed in those sun lamps until just a few weeks ago actually. A friend of mine had one, and was just joking around by turning it on. For whatever reason, whether it's just in my head or not, it actually made me feel better. I think they're a valid solution to melancholy that's not drug related.
