Oh, right. Pokemon.
So, lessee. Last time I was avoiding fights with wild Pokemon because I didn't have any pokeballs yet. So I ran to the Pokemart only to find that they didn't have any Pokeballs either. Good work Pokemart. You have one. Job. Oh well. I was told to go find Brendan. Maybe he'll let me play with his balls.
...Wait.
I find Brendan, and he's going over his strategy notes for this game, and when he sees me he says we should try a battle together. The fight is actually kinda intense, to the point where I need to use a potion to keep from losing. Brendan takes it in stride, and gives me his allowance as winnings. "I think I know why my dad had his eye on you!". Well, THAT isn't creepy at all. Brendan invites me back to his dad's lab, where Professor Birch gives me my Pokedex, and Brendan gives me some Pokeballs and they both express how exciting this is to be on a Pokemon journey. I am reminded of one of the reasons I like this series, at least in the ones I've played: Your rival isn't a cocky dickbag constantly explaining why he rules and you drool. He or she is a humble winner and gracious loser, which makes having a recurring opponent easier to handle. Brendan is just as excited for Cody's Pokemon journey as he is for his own.
I head out of town to look for some Pokemon, and get stopped by Cody's mom looking in on him. Then once that is done, Brendan runs up and stops me too. Dude, we were just talking. Like, a minute ago! No, it turns out that Professor Birch forgot to put an app on my Pokedex, so Brendan got tasked with that. Or you can let my sync with iTunes later. Oh, don't look at me like that. Of course Pokedexes are made by Apple. Anyway, the app is called DexNav, and it lets you know what kind of Pokemon live in a place you've been, making it easier to find Pokemon you want. This is legit cool. I run off to find some Pokemon to form a team with and after a while find Brendan again. He shows me a tail sticking out of a nearby stand of tall grass and tells me that if I use the circle-pad joystick I can slowly sneak up on it, and that if I catch it, it'll have a rare move. I blow it, of course, because the controls aren't super sensitive and I overcompensate. But there's always next time.
I briefly get lost because I went north out of town, and to continue that way you need Surf. Its okay, though, as I use the opportunity to grind my Pokemon a bit before I figure out where I am supposed to go. This turns out to be a good idea, because when I find Route 102, I find that it is studded with amateur trainers itching for a fight, and they've all leveled their Pokemon to level 4! Among them is a Youngster named Calvin who comes at me with a Zigzagoon. I would like to think he should have a somewhat more... tigerish 'mon, but I can't think of any that would be decent at this level. I also find a butt-tail Pokemon that I don't scare off! A Surskit with the sole ability of Fell Stinger. This seems to be a good deal, since apparently you usually have to breed for it. It's also holding a bit of honey, bonus. I will have to see how it pans out, I am normally not hugely into bug Pokemon.
As I am about to head into the next town, Brendan runs up to me and asks me if I know about the DexNav's "Detector Mode", but before he can launch into his speil, he's distracted by a couple butterfly Pokemon flittering by. This completely breaks his concentration and makes him feel "Kinda... warm, you know?". I guess this is what happens when you spray Pokemon potions into your mouth.
Next stop is Petalburg, which is the location of the first gym. Which, as it just so happens, is also the gym seen over by Cody's absent father, Norman. Well, that sounds like an entire can of worms itself, so I resolve to grind up my 'mons a little more and tackle the gym next time!
