PAS-B^3 Episode Six: Your Tax PokeDollars At Work

Feb 28, 2016 22:02

Okay, so last time we interacted with the plot, we encountered a member of Team Aqua who had stolen some sciency stuff from the totally-not-suspicious Devon Corporation, and was hiding out in a nearby partially-completed tunnel. The tunnel is still there, so I guess it's time to check out the green path to the north of the town instead!

Turns out there's not much there, just a park with a bunch of ledges suggesting that some other path empties out there, and a nice beach. On the beach I find a dose of zinc, which increases a Mon's special defense. I finally relent to follow the Team Aqua goon, and encounter a boy hanging out along the path that challenges me with his level 7 Zigzagoon. I legit feel bad about this, guys. I whip out a couple Quick Attacks, figuring if nothing else I owe it to make it quick. On the plus side, this one fight is enough to level Alucard from 1 directly to 3! His second contender is a level 9 Machop, and this is at least a little better of a fight.

I run a short gauntlet and find the cave in question. Actually, I was expecting a tunnel, but no, it's just a cave. There is a sign next to it reminding us that the project was canceled. Standing outside the cave is a man who appears to be beside himself. He was attacked by an odd thug, who made off with his beloved pet Peeko. Don't worry, buddy. I got you. In a moment. Meanwhile, there's a little house called "The Tunneler's Rest Home", outside of which is a blackbelt, who is mad because he was digging the tunnel (Without tools!) when some goon ordered him out. I... guess he means a city official, as if he's beating a tunnel throught the mountain with his bare hands, some random guy kicking him out would soon have a tunnel punched through HIM.

I go into the cave and find the grunt, who exclaims "Keel-haul it all! This pokemon hostage turned out to be worthless!". "Keel-haul it all"? Does the fact that they're Team Aqua mean they're pirate themed now? I guess? But that doesn't explain the Poochenya he throws at my face. I guess I should just count myself lucky that he's not alternately spewing "Pokemon Training is abusive by nature!" and "Your pokemon can't reach their full potential with you!". I take him out quickly and he laments "Is this the end of my evil deeds?". First; I am not a cop. All I can do to you is have my pets dogpile you. No pun intended. Secondly; if you know already your plans are evil, it's time to re-examine your life.

Either way, he piles his swag into my arms and bolts. Seeing the grunt runs off draws the attention of the man whose Wingull was stolen, so he runs back in to be reunited. This guy is Mr. Briney, who owns the fishing shack by Petalburg. I suspect that this means that I am about to unlock the fishing minigame, but what I really want is Rock Break, because that's what I'm going to need to unlock the other end of this path. Well, I have to go back to Rustboro to return that stolen Devon tech anyway. And now the crazy blackbelt is happy because he can go back to punching rocks!

I duck into the digging shack really quickly to see what's going on. There are three workers in there. one complains about the really long, circuitous path to Verdanturf without using the tunnel. Another complains about how since the tunnel project was shut down he has nothing to do but sit around. There's a union joke to be make here, I'm pretty sure. The third guy is watching TV, and when I go to him I accidentally turn on the TV and get an episode of KOUKAN TALK:

"Toru: OSSU! Recently, I met an UTSUKUSHII woman at a party! The second I saw her, I thought I’d seen her before somewhere. But I couldn’t remember her name! So, in this situation, I went up to her, and I said this: “Dokoka de atta koto arukke?” Do-ko-ka de a ta ko-to a-ru keh? It means, “Have we met somewhere?” And what do you think she said to me? “What? I work with you every day. You’re not serious, right?” IYA! It was an all-prettied-up Azusa! SHIMATAAA! So, that’s it for today’s “KOUKAN TALK”! ...I sure hope Azusa will start talking to me again soon!

I have no idea what just happened here, except that I have a strange urge to append "~Desu" to all my sentences, ~desu.

So, I take the parts back to the scientist and he's so happy that he gives me a Great Ball, ~desu! My dissapointment must have been palapable because he then ushers me inside and gets me a meeting with the President of the Devon Corporation, ~desu. The president is so grateful for my help, that he wants me to run an errand for him, ~desu. But, he is willing to pay up front, and installs the BuzzNav app on my PokeNav. ~desu. This is apparently some sort of combo news and social media app, ~desu. The favor is that he wants me to run a letter to a guy named Steven in Dewford, ~desu. But Dewford is across the sea, so he's going to call Mr Briney and arrange travel with him, ~desu.

Well, I wouldn't expect a big corporation to contract with strange hermits for travel, but you gots to make da monies somehow, right, ~desu? We can pick this up tomorrow, for some reason I feel like I have suffered head trauma, ~desu. I'm not sure why, ~desu.
