PAS-B^3 Episode 8: You thought the Ball Handling jokes Were Done, Didn't You?

Mar 06, 2016 00:02

When I left off, I had to head back to Petalburg to talk to Mr. Briney, for at least two things. So, I head outside and bump into Brendan in the courtyard, bragging about how many pokemon he's found. He doesn't challenge Cody or anything, so nothing comes of it. Actually, kinda a shame, I think? Anyway.

So, I head to Mr Briney and we sail off for Dewford Island! Mr Briney tells me that if I get lost to check out the gym, so I guess we know where our next badge is coming from. I need to find Steven first, though, so I do my usual Breaking and Entering thing. One guy shows me his new silk scarf which he loves so much that he just has to give it to me! Um, well, that's... not suspicious at all.

Outside the Dewford Hall, I find a trendy teen who's all about these hot new Potion Parties. What do I know about potion parties? Only what I hear about them on 20/20. Supposedly potions make you feel 'Kinda... warm, you know?'. The kid asks what's hot and popular where I come from. Um... Great Ball... Masters? Yeah, that's it! Mastering your Great Balls. It's what all the kids are doing.

I step inside Dewford Hall and all anyone wants to talk about is Great Ball Masters. Truely a cutting commentary on our flightly, over media-saturated culture. So, that's a bust. Imma check out the gym. I mean, I was told to talk to the gym leader Brawly for information. I go in and am relieved to find that this gym doesn't seem to have a huge elaborate gimmick like most are. There's a lobby and a reception desk and everything. Of course, that doesn't mean that there aren't trainers who are eager to kick my ass. Well, alright, let's do this then. The main corridor of the gym is designed to easily let you out but not in, you have to detour through a bunch of dark creepy locker rooms in order to get through. I have a few too many Normal type tags in my party for the gym trainers to not be a problem, but I still have my Starter, and he's Grass typed, and still a little over-leveled for this place, so I'm not worried.

Incidentally, I wasn't really expecting a Gym fight this suddenly, so I didn't transcribe my party first. Not a big deal, there is not a lot that has changed yet. Anyway, it's not long before I meet Brawly, who is aptly named, can I say it was nice of him to take time out of his undercover investigation on The Dead Presidents to have this gym fight?

Brawley's game is weak. All he has is a Machop and a Makuhita! Is that all you got, Brawley? How did you get to be a gym leader with that weak-ass garbage? I get the Strong Bad Badge, I mean the Fist-Of-Knuckles badge. I mean the Knuckles badge, and a copy of TM08 - Bulk Up. Cody puts that in the "Never-Gonna-Use" pocket of his satchel. He also drops that he saw Steven in a place he likes to hang out called Granite Cave which is full of rocks and cave paintings and so forth.

So, let's check out that cave! On the way I encounter a fisherman who desperately has to use the restroom but is deathly afraid that the Big One is going to come nibbling on his lure while he's out. I have a number of responses to that, and I'm sure you will thank me for not repeating any of them. I go into the cave and it's spooky and cavernous. A passing hiker warns me that it gets even MORE spooky and cavernous further on, but "Helping others is the Hiker's Motto!" and passes me a copy of TM70-Flash! Cu Culainn the Ralts is looking for more meaning to life, so I put that on him!

I follow the cave to it's end (Surprisingly not needing flash yet), until I get to a large chamber where a grey-haired young man is examining a mural depicting what looks like if Godzilla was a whale, as depicted by South Pacific Islanders. The man is properly in awe of the awesome power of Mobyzilla, musing that this is a "super-ancient Pokemon" with "terrible strength" but confused because this seems different than Mega-Evolution. Well, considering how Mega Evolution was only discovered in time for the previous game, I can hardly see how it wouldn't be.

Steven, I presume? It appears that this fellow is interested in rare and unusual stones, and wanders the World of Pokemon to seek them out. He figures this made him unreasonably hard to find, so when we present him with the letter from the Devon guy, he tips us with TM51-Steel Wing. Steven turns back to the mural and asks me how it makes me feel. It makes me feel like singing.

From this point I'm kinda at a loss, so I finish exploring what I can of the island and then go back to Mr Briney, who tells me that he just got a message from Mr Stone from Devon who wants me to take those recovered stolen parts to a guy in Slateport. Well, alright, but I've only been paid for one delivery so far. No payment is immediately forthcoming, but it beats going back to Petalburg, I guess.

Cody steps off the boat and is immediately challenged by Sailor Huey; a large, muscular man in a sailor suit doing a bodybuilder 'Look at my muscles' pose. Well, I'm a little weirded out by this but something tells me Cody isn't. Down, boy. There's plenty of time to go trying to catch Machomon when you're in High School. Next I bump into a woman who insists that you can't take your eyes off small children for a second, but then, she left HERS with her pokemon, so he'll be fine. Lady, I'm going to walk away now before Child Welfare smacks everyone within a 20ft radius of you.

Cody has a few low-key adventures, including a seaside resturant full of people itching for a fight, during which Fang turned into a Mightyena. In doing so, she tried to learn the ability Snarl! Lessee. "The user yells as if it's ranting about something, which lowers the Special Attack stat of the opposing pokemon." This is hilarious, and makes total sense. After all, people yelling about the Flat Earth makes me want to forget all finesse and simply fall upon them like a tidal wave of fists. The owner of the resturant is not only not upset with the chaos in his place, but he rewards Cody for the battles with a six-pack of pop!

Next up, Cody explores Slateport and continues his career as an unpaid courier.
