Pre-Notes: You can blame
elefantelocura, if you need to blame someone. You can blame me for the fact that it's not particularly sexy. Today's mix is
A Very Fandom Christmas. Enjoy!
Disclaimer: If you liked it, then you shoulda put a ring on it.
what it feels like (to miss me)
The ring doesn't really mean anything. He's not a virgin, but the ring gives people expectations, makes them think things. Nick never really bothers to tell them that the ring is as tarnished as his metaphorical halo. He thinks Harry knows, though. No, scratch that.
Harry knows.
Nick can see it in the way that Harry smiles at him, the way that Harry shakes his hand when they meet, and he smiles back and lets the light reflect off the ring that hangs around his neck. Maybe moving it to the chain is admission enough, but Nick doesn't think anyone's noticed. Or maybe they don't think that hard about what it means.
In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter. Nick has spent his entire life in the flash of cameras, he knows how to deal with fame. It hardly hurts when people gossip about him now-but he also doesn't read the talk that often. He knows about Harry's reputation though, if only through hearsay. He still talks to Demi and Selena and-he doesn't talk to Miley. That bridge was burned a long time ago, but he still has friends from back then. They know Harry, having stayed in the business when he tried the solo thing-they all tried the solo thing, aside from Kevin.
None of that matters, really, except for how Harry and Nick keep running into each other. Except for how Harry grins every time their eyes meet, sometimes waving and sometimes not. They don't really talk, and Nick doesn't know why he does it. Doesn't like why he slips the ring from its chain and back onto his finger.
Well, no. That's a lie. He does it because he wants Harry to come to him. Nick is self-aware enough to admit that, if only to himself. It's a little pathetic, maybe, but Nick doesn't care because it works. Harry finds his way over to Nick at the next event and smiles.
"You're wearing the ring again."
"I missed it," Nick says simply.
"I miss it too," Harry says, "but it's not as easy as putting on a ring for me."
Vaguely, Nick knows what Harry's referencing. He heard this story from someone, when he was asking around about Harry, but he doesn't say that he understands. Instead, Nick smiles. There's a lot he could say, but he doesn't say any of it. Instead, he fiddles with the ring for a moment.
"Maybe," he says, "it's as easy as taking one off."
If Harry has a response, Nick doesn't get to hear it. Someone calls his name and he's being dragged away. They don't see each other again for a while, in the wrong countries at the wrong times, but there's always another event. They see each other again, and this time Harry slips him something, a hotel name and room number on a piece of paper. Nick smiles for the cameras and tucks the paper away. When everything is over, Nick slips away to the hotel on the piece of paper and rides up to the room.
He knocks on the door and it opens a moment later. Harry grins at Nick and pulls him in, shutting the door behind them. Once they're alone, Harry slips the ring off Nick's finger and lets it fall to the floor before pressing him against the wall and kissing him soundly.
Nick doesn't mind at all.
