That does look like quite a big fire, so it's good that you were there to keep an eye on it. I hope it just burns itself out without spreading too far.

The forest was definitely happy to have me up there, keeping an eye on the thing ... and honestly, it was really cool to watch.

The fire is just about out, now. Fall is in the air, and the fire area got a good inch of rain last week. I'm sure it will still smoke for a while, though ...

It's both beautiful and scary.

Why didn't they want to fight it? Is it not dangerous for the forest if it spreads too much?

It really is both those things.

My forest fights most of the fires that start here, but in cases where the fire was caused by lightning and is in a remote location, they will sometimes let the fire take its natural course. This recognizes that fire has always been a part of the natural history of the forest, and that at a certain level, it helps keep the forest healthy over time ...

Thanks, Lyn. The forest is very concerned about employee safety, and this fire stayed miles away from me.
