Well what I think is that you should become friends with this guy first... I know thats so cliche but really... if you can't find it in yourself to talk to this guy now as it is, its even going to be more awkward if you go on a date first...
LOL and another thing... getting his phone number of the work directory kinda screams stalker... so that might not be the best impression to give him either... So I guess try to friend him somehow ... then I see three possible possibilities...
1. You become friends and then date... 2. You become friends and you figure out his personality is a total clash with yours and you stay friends... or he has a gf 3. After really talking to him you think.. "my god he is such a jerk! what did i see in him!
LOL just my advice... but then again this is coming from a girl whose never dated...
