Narnia

And like I said I would, I saw The Chronicles of Narnia

I really liked Narnia, I thought they did justice to the books, which I grew up reading over and over again many times. Not being Christian, I never had much idea of the allegory until I was older, so that doesn't really affect my view of the story.

I liked the casting, although in the books Edmund was always my favorite and Peter and Susan were very boring and in the movie I found him so bratty and Peter had so much heart he became my favorite.
Susan's lines were really terrible, they could have given her a better personality than just being a naysayer all the time. She didn't even get to show off much of her archery skills.
Lucy was adorable and I loved her scene with Tumnus. Tumnus was quite perfect and the scene was SO GOOD.
They left all the imagery I've so loved in! I grew up watching the animated version so I was thrilled to see the fur coats marching through the snow (I WANT ONE! fake-fur of course:P), and all the horrible creatures surrounding Aslan although I did think in the book they were more fearful of him and only came near him when he was dead, and the drop in the snow becoming hot chocolate (I think it was?), and the stone creatures in the courtyard. I think I would have likes some more shots of Cair Paravel though. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

I've always wanted to try Turkish Delight ever since I read the books:P That dwarf was weird though, I didn't like him so much.

The White Witch! The casting was fabulous for her, I can't think of a more convincing evil Queen Jadis. She was just what the movie needed to lend it strength. The problem with a child's tale being made into a movie is that is seems so much less plausible when you see it instead of imagining it. Some things become quite absurd, like the crowning of four kids who haven't even passed puberty to rule over a country. Two of my friends were laughing their heads off at that part and many others. I mean it is funny when you stop to think about it "HEY 6-year-old, have a KNIFE! Merry Christmas!". I think another person playing Jadis could have been too over the top to be believable and made a mockery of the part showing just how improbable the movie is. But she was fantastic, her with Aslan's mane around her neck and the POLAR BEARS !:D Her dresses all had a really awful top part though, what was with that? Couldn't she have one better dress?

Peter was pretty cute. He was the only blond one though, fancy that. The milkman's child, perhaps? I liked the adults they showed playing the parts, although Edmund looked like the nerdy one. I like the Professor, but I forget who he is. He must be a character from The Magician's Nephew, I haven't read that one in aaaaaages; I've totally forgotten it. I was remembering how in the book Aslan says he is also in the real world, but just in a different form. Is that suppose to refer to Jesus as well or should we look for a person other than him to represent Aslan, like a headmaster or something?

I really liked the Narnian clothes, they were like I've always imagined from the book illustrations. And I liked the crowns. It was still funny seeing a court of animals bowing down to four kids though:P The CGI was good though, the beavers and of course, Aslan was amazing. All the animals were great-looking. My friend thought the battles were too short for her though. She also couldn't believe how much crying there was in the movie. I have to admit when Lucy cried at the end I thought it was too much. I liked the casting for all the kids as well.

My friend remarked how implausible it was that they totally forgot the first ten years or so of their lives and where they were from and who they were. I never thought about that when I read the book, I just thought how amazingly cool it was that they could live as royalty in Narnia for ages and ages and have adventures and fun and still come back to their old lives, not having missed much or changed.

Do you guys feel cheated out of a scene where Edmund gets punished? I don't think there was one in the book either, I mean you just know Aslan talked to him and all is forgiven, but is that really enough? And the movie didn't really make a point out of how Edmund's idea to break the wand was really the turning point for the battle. He deserved a bit more credit for that.

Overall Narnia was a good movie, but very much a child's movie, moreso than Harry Potter is for sure. I think King Kong was a better movie, but only because the plot was less of a child's story and as an adult it's not as easy to accept things the way kids see them. I look forward to the next Narnia movie!
