I leave in a week to go see my Mother for what is more than likley her last Mother's Day.  Over the years, we have definitely been everywhere from relatively cordial to completely estranged to in heated battle.  I didn't have an overly desireable relationship with my mother, especially growing up.  Shortly after becoming an adult, she then needed

To be honest, I don't understand why people let their relatives get away with being parasites just because "they're family". You don't owe shit to anyone who wasn't there for you when you needed them, ESPECIALLY your family. I'm glad to hear you don't feel guilty about making the choices you have, but even so, consider what point is there in even letting these people be part of your life if all they do is suck the life out of you? Life is too short to waste your time and energy on people like that.

I really don't have a relationship with them outside dealing with their children and my parents. Hell, they don't even know I'll be there next week :)

So much sympathy. My relationship was very similar with my father. If I was in your position, I would feel zero guilt about the distance between us as well. You don't need that shit :P
