But they are the manly tears of the heroic warrior. ;) My Greek class didn't read any of the Patroclus sections, or I would've been bawling too (Hector's death was bad enough).
Oh, of course ;) I didn't get to read much of the Iliad, much to my chagrin, though I had a very cool G100 prof who let us do some Homer one Friday and my brain and I sat there going H0M3R NAU PLZ KTHX. For some reason the classics department was bigger on assigning the Odyssey (because it was more relatable? More fantastic elements? The first novel? Women played a larger role? Who knows), which I also love but the Iliad is a better poem and I swear to God I read the Odyssey like 300 times during the course of my career.
I think my class was the first to get the Iliad instead of the Odyssey--something about it being relevant in times of violence, I guess? I barely passed my third semester of Greek, and I was amazed at how easy Homer was compared to fucking Herodotus.
