[character]: Ty Lee
[character history / background]:
More than you ever needed to know![character abilities]:
Unlike some characters in the series, Ty Lee has no element-bending abilities, but she more than makes up for it with her gymnastic and chi-blocking abilities. From a young age, Ty Lee is shown to be very skilled in gymnastics and later joined a circus. She can not only easily walk on ropes, but confidently run on them as well. Flips, cartwheels, handstands: these are all very easy for her, and she's confident in her abilities. Beyond that, she has the somewhat unique knowledge of pressure points which she uses temporarily disable body parts or bending abilities. Basically she's very skilled physically.
[character personality]:
Ty Lee normally seems like she's in her own "little Ty Lee world". Even though she ended up assisting Azula in her pursuit of the Avatar, she usually had a smile on her face and cheerful disposition when not actively working against Aang and his friends - and sometimes, she smiles even when she is fighting against them! Her upbeat attitude about the deal has less to do with any personal desire to take part in the demise of the Avatar and more to do with the fact she enjoys being with her friends Azula and Mai being and able to show her skills. Being cheerful and fun-loving is just the way she is.
One of the reasons she's able to remain happy is because she tends to look on the bright side and find something enjoyable in almost any situation. The best example of this is when Azula makes staying at her dream job at the circus unbearable. While she outright said she would rather stay and she's obviously scared by Azula, she is genuinely happy in the end to be with her friends again, and settles into her new role casually and with ease. Even at the end of the series, after being imprisoned, she still has her usual upbeat attitude and even befriended some of her fellow inmates. She's pretty good at taking things in stride.
Maybe because she's usual cheerful and fun-loving, she makes friends easily and tends to be friendly with people regardless of where they're from or where she is at the time. She's a self-confessed lover of parties and someone who obviously loves physical activities that showcase her talents. She's usually good-natured, even with her enemies, with the worst she did on a personal level was tell a Kyoshi Warrior that she wasn't "as pretty" as Ty Lee herself was. ...And even then, Ty Lee likely befriended that same girl in prison less than a year later when she joined the Kyoshi Warriors.
She's really not all sunshine and rainbows, though. A few of her traits - such as her sociability and the way makes a show out of her acrobatic talent - stems from an innate desire for attention and to stand out. Having been part of a "matching set" with her sisters, she wanted more than anything to set out as her own individual. This in itself is a sore spot for her and the source of quite a bit of unhappiness, but not something she's incapable of overcoming going by the end of the series. She's also the sort of person that, because of her love of attention, likely wouldn't find it easy to commit, and seems to be rather self-centered when it comes boys who have an interest in her. While she's hurt when Azula points out that boys only like her because she's a tease, she really doesn't do anything to prove she cares about those boys any more than they seem to care about her. She likes to flirt and be attended to; she's not looking for something serious and isn't that comfortable with things going in that direction.

[journal post]:
Wow, this place sure is... something. [ Ty Lee walks around the streets off the square, looking around with a small smile. ] At first I thought these buildings were really drab and depressing, but you know, everyone living together sounds pretty fun! [ There's a bit of a skip in her step as she thinks of it. ] I mean, it must be really easy to get together when you're all in the same building already.
Now if only it wasn't so cold here, it really wouldn't be too bad!
[third person / log sample]:
Ty Lee had always been closer to Azula than Mai. Mai was gloomy and Azula was more spirited - and always a bit of a bully, but everyone had their bad points, didn't they? Even if Azula's "bad points" were more than a bit scary... To Ty Lee at least, she really was her friend! But Mai was really Azula's friend, too, and Zuko was really Azula's brother... They had all been friends since they were kids, and seeing it come to blows like this - with Azula lashing out at Mai for saving that gondola with Zuko from plummeting and Mai ready to defend herself with knives - was more frightening than anything else they had endured together.
Frozen between them as they argued, Ty Lee never wanted it to come to this. In the end, though, part of Mai's words about loving Zuko more than fearing Azula resonated with her. Ty Lee didn't want to see any of her friends hurt, but between Mai and Azula, Ty Lee knew which one had to be outright stopped.
Right arm, left arm, shoulders... She couldn't bear to watch, but her hands knew where to go and what to do even through her panic. Maybe she had anticipated - and feared - having to do this someday, and the time was here now with Mai making her stand.
Still, she couldn't believe she did it herself. Ty Lee watched Azula tumble before her in mild surprise of her own actions, that after all that time together, she's the one to cause her friend to fall. Even with everything she knew about Azula, Ty Lee never expected she would go so far as to nearly kill Zuko and Mai...
--Right, Mai. Ty Lee snapped out of it and rushed over to Mai desperately. Grabbing a hold of her friend's sleeves, Ty Lee tries to pull her away - anywhere. "Come on, let's get out of here!" Even on a previously inescapable prison like the Boiling Rock, there had to be some way-- But before the idea could even be completed, the guards encircled the pair from all angles, and those tugs at Mai's sleeves turned to a mutual cling between the two girls.
"You're both fools," Azula growled up at them from the spot Ty Lee had let her fall. But even with that cruel look on the princess's face and Mai being roughly pulled away from her by the guards, Ty Lee decided she didn't fear Azula so much anymore, either. Her hands held firmly behind her by the guard, she only glared back as Azula as she damned her two former friends to life in prison. They might have both betrayed Azula there, but Ty Lee didn't regret it.
