Were you the only adult on this trip? Because otherwise, there is no shame in saying, "I have physical injuries that prevent me from riding in a bus stairwell for 81 miles."

Reminds me of a similar trip I took with my middle schoolers last year (who thinks up these 24 hour marathon trips anyway!!??) where one bus caught fire and barbequed on the way back (we got the kids off before the whole bus lit up). The experience is not something I would wish on ANYONE.
My sympathies and wishes for a speedy recovery.
