Write about your father.

Which one?

Dad, my ex-dad, is called Ian McClellan. He's teaching history at college. In Canada now. And he's married some woman I've never met. Last time I called him she picked up the phone and was really weird. She asked me things like if my 'doggie''s feeling all right and such. Like I was a little kid. Which I'm not. My ex-dad keeps saying I'd like her if I'd met her. I don't think I would. And I'm not going to meet her anyway when he keeps uninviting me to Canada all the time.
But back to dad. Before he went to Canada, he was at Cambridge. We all were. We lived in Grantchester. And mum and dad went to Cambridge to teach at the university. That was their job.
And for about a year, he went to some place in France. Writing a book. He left mum and me alone to do so. And I don't think he'd ever came back if mum hadn't ...
He left. That's what he's good at. Leaving. He left me for France twice and then for Canada. Well, for Canada, he pretended like he wanted to take me with him. I don't think he wanted to though. I told him I wanted to stay with Duncan and I think he was glad.
He's good at another thing too. Making out with college girls. After he came back to stay with me in Grantchester he did that a lot. He'd invite them to our house and take them to mum's study of all places. He'd tell me they were students of his and he had to tutor them. But I know they were making out in there. Maybe they even had sex. I don't want to know. I always left to house when he was with someone.

My real dad's called Duncan Kincaid. He was married with mum before she married my ex-dad. Before I was born. I didn't know I even existed till I was nearly 12. Duncan's a copper. Detective Superintendent. He's at Scotland Yard and he solves homicides. He's a cool guy most of the time. He doesn't know much about things I like but he's listening. He even remembers some odd things I told him before. And he doesn't treat me like a kid. Most of the time he lets me do what I want to. And most of the times he doesn't, he at least gives a real reason why. Not some 'your-the-kid-I'm-the-adult-that's-why' reason. A real reason. But then he's not around much. He's working a lot. He sometimes even isn't around when it's really important for him to be.
I like living with him and Gemma. We're a family now.
