I'm exactly the same way about emotionally complex things. It can bother my people, but it's actually legal to have your own processing style. (And this one is common among introverts.)
Changing your self-image is one of the hardest things in the world. I've been mostly successful at changing my thinking about my current self, but I still hate my past self with a passion, and that's a lot harder to get through. I have convincing evidence that people like me now, but a lot less that people liked who I used to be.
