Her pleasant dreams were always fuzzy, bathed in a warm diffused light. More often than not they centered around her family, like flashes of memory that never quite made it in conscious thought, but surfaced in the relaxed subconscious. They often faded nicely, leaving Megumi staring up at the ceiling with her eyes wide open and a gentle smile on her face. She slowly sat up, thanking the gods that the nausea spell that had plagued her for weeks was over. The swelling of her abdomen was beginning to make itself felt and she could no longer wear jeans. Her feet hurt in the mornings and standing for too long hurt her back. Such is the reality of pregnancy.
Life, she smiled sleepily as she patted her stomach. I’m nurturing life within me. She slowly padded to the window and slid it open, her smile growing wider. It was a lovely Saturday morning, the kind of morning you’d want to get married in. The air was crisp and fresh, the sun shone benevolently and the breeze blessed you with every whisper. Her gaze fell on the bridesmaid dress hanging in front of her wardrobe. “Well,” She said softly; “Let’s get it on.”
Whether it was Ruri’s thoughtfulness or simply a matter of taste, the bridesmaid dresses were empire-cut with a high waistline, effectively hiding her baby bump. She arranged her long hair into a sleek chignon and secured the little flower arrangement over her ear that all bridesmaids were required to wear. Her parents were out of town, visiting relatives which meant she had to be chauffeured to the church. Not that Yuusuke would have it any other way - he refused point-blank to let her drive.
She stared at the reflection and smiled happily. The expression felt alien, but then again lately she didn’t have much to smile about anyway. Her phone buzzed and she looked at it. A message from Ruri.
I’m so excited!!!!!
Megumi almost laughed out loud. Excited? Who wouldn’t on their wedding day? She tried to imagine herself in Ruri's shoes - a giddy girl just hours away from changing her name to that of her loved one. In one breath she would no longer be a 'miss' but a 'Mrs', she would no longer be alone, but half of a whole.
It was a terrifying, wonderful, amazing thought. For no apparent reason she whispered out loud; "Aizawa... Megumi."
It sounded right. It also hurt to say out loud.
"Some things should never be said, I guess?" She patted her baby and imagined it responding.
The car that would take her to the church arrived in front of the house on time, and she beamed at the driver. “Good morning!”
“Morning miss,” The driver tipped his hat. “You look very lovely.”
“Well I’m not the one getting married,” Megumi beamed as the car pulled away from the driveway. After a few minutes however, she frowned at the route the driver was taking. “Where are we going?”
“I need to pick up one more passenger miss,” The driver politely answered. “Don’t worry, we’ll be there in time.”
Another passenger? But all the other bridesmaids stayed in a hotel close to the church. Yuusuke’s relatives would come from his house, which was on the other side of town.
Her thoughts were cut when the passenger door opened and a man slid in. The driver tipped his hat. “Good morning, sir.”
“Morning.” Came the curt reply and he looked at Megumi. “Hello, Shiraishi.”
And all Megumi could do was stare in total shock at Aizawa Kousaku sitting next to her, smartly dressed in a suit.
