excerpt: A thirty-item multiple choice test, that should be easy, right? After all, the options only vary between A, B and C.

It was early morning on October 15th when a young lad had been sitting near the porch of their school garden, listening blissfully to the music coming from his iPod whilst holding pieces of paper and a mechanical pencil. What he was doing at school early in the morning, you ask? He was studying for their scheduled examination later that day. From a far people who didn’t know who he was would think that he was crazy, staying near the school garden, idly humming to himself whilst browsing through his notes. However, people knew who he was; he was famous after all and these people recognize him, being one of the honor students of their batch.

He looked up and noticed people slowly coming in the school campus, signs of lack of sleep and energy evident on their droopy eyes and slouched shoulders as they walked on the pathway towards the school building. Some would send knowing looks at him, recognizing him as that guy who always goes to school early on exam days and moved on as they were used to it. He resumed to what he was doing, solving advanced problems on the workbooks he pulled out from his bag. He was no nerd, he didn’t even look like one; in fact, he was one of the famous people at their school who liked to stay low profile. See, he simply enjoyed studying - well, a little too much, some would say.

The guy was too drawn into what he was doing and was too enamored by the soothing music that he failed to notice the footsteps emerging from behind. Moments later, he felt a delicate hand covering his eyes followed by a soft, “Guess who?” in his ears.

“Who else, but you?” He teased, knowing perfectly who the person was. He slowly took the hand away and looked back, only to see the figure of the person who he had been looking forward to see. He was about to speak further when suddenly, a box neatly wrapped in blue sparkly gift wrapper, secured by a black ribbon was placed before him.

“Happy Birthday, Donghae.” The person whispered, head turned sideward, trying but failing to hide the creeping red tinge on her face.

Donghae, on the other hand, was fazed. He had completely forgotten that today was his birthday if not for this event. He smiled at the other person and reached out for the box and carefully unwrapped it, revealing a heart-shaped chocolate cake with the words ‘Happy Birthday, Donghae!’ written with frosting.

“Hyukjae, you didn’t have to… really.” He said, looking back and forth, from the blushing girl and the chocolate cake. He dipped his finger into the frosting and tasted it while nodding to himself, “This tastes good.”

“It’s your birthday, I had to do something for you! I spent all night trying to make it, I’m glad you found the taste well.” She said, biting her lips while fidgeting with her fingers. “I thought it was a failure.”

“Silly, you don’t have to worry. It tastes great.” He paused as he dipped his finger again on the frosting of the cake and offered it for Hyukjae to taste. “Here, taste it yourself.” Although she was hesitant at first, not only was it unhygienic and could be considered as an indirect kiss, but she gave in and tasted it and he was right, it did taste good.

“Mmm.” Hyukjae licked her lips clean whilst nodding to herself.

“See, tastes good doesn’t? You should be proud of yourself, Hyukkie.”

“Wow, I’m just so happy that you like it. The whole night trying to get the ingredients and the mixture right, all is worth it.”

“You made this the whole night? As in, you were working on this the whole night, just for me?” Donghae asked, a look of worry on his face.

“Yeah, I did. Birthdays do come only once every year.”

“Did you even study, Hyukkie?”

“Study? What for?” A moment of silence ensued as Hyukjae tried to recall, only to be shocked herself when she realized what Donghae had meant. “Oh my god, we have an exam today on Trigonometry and I didn’t study. Oh my god, Hae, what should I do?” Hyukjae held onto Donghae’s shoulders, slightly shaking him, as panic seeped through her.

“Don’t panic, I’ll help you, okay. The exam doesn’t start until,” He paused, looking at his iPod for the time. “an hour. We have an hour, I’ll teach you, okay? If it’s not enough then we’ll find a way just.. don’t cry.” He said, reaching out to Hyukjae whose tears were brimming at the corners of her eyes and slowly wiped them away.

“Come, let’s put this cake in my locker and let’s head to the library.”

Donghae twisted and turned the lock as he put in the combination for his locker; when he had finally opened it, he carefully placed the box of cake amongst his other things and made sure that it was secure. He was thankful that the school campus had centralized air-conditioning, if not then the cake might get wasted.

“Do you have your book with you? Let’s head to the library.” He said, holding on to Hyukjae’s arm as he guided her towards the library. As they entered the library, Donghae caught sight of their professor in trigonometry and decided to ask him about the test.

“Mr. Cho!” Donghae called out.

“Ah, Lee Donghae, level 3 class 1 if I’m not mistaken. What can I do for you? Have you studied well for the exams?” Mr. Cho replied. Mr. Cho was their professor in Trigonometry, his full name is Cho Kyuhyun and unlike other professors in their university, he wasn’t an old married man. He was actually a fresh graduate from the school when he had been accepted in the faculty - proves that he had the skill and not just the looks.

“Yes, sir. Actually I was wondering, is the test easy?” He bluntly asked.

“Define easy.”

“Uh, something that even one who didn’t study would be able to answer without qualms?” He suggested.

“I wouldn’t say it’s easy but since it is the end of the school year afterall, I made it easier - a thirty-item multiple choice exam. Knowing you, you’d probably ace it.” Mr. Cho gave a reassuring smile before he sauntered off and went to the special section for teachers I the library. Donghae watched his professor’s retreating back, still having a whiff of his scent that he caught when he walked past by. He quickly went to the seat Hyukjae had found unoccupied.

“Mr. Cho said that the test would be a multiple choice test, thirty items also.” Donghae explained while flipping through the workbook.

“Okay, we’ll start off with the Fundamental Identities.”

And so, the lessons began. Donghae took his time explaining every topic that was to show up in the test while Hyukjae nods and listens to him. After every topic, Donghae gives her a number of exercises to answer, seventy-five percent of which, she answers well. It wasn’t long until the first bell rang, alerting the students of the beginning of class hours.

“Donghae, it’s time. We haven’t tackled up Trigonometric Equations yet.” Hyukjae said, voice full of worry.

“I know this is wrong but listen, it’s a multiple choice test, isn’t it? And knowing how Mr. Cho makes his tests, Trigonometric Equations would be the last five questions.”

“And you’re saying?”

“All I’m saying is that I’ll whisper to you the answers during the test; for that part only though.” Donghae went nearer to Hyukjae and looked around to see if the coast was clear as he unveiled his plan.

“But that’s cheat- mmpf!” Hyukjae started but was interrupted by Donghae who clamped his hand on her mouth, preventing her from speaking.

“Think of it as my payback to you, had you not been thinking about my birthday cake then you would’ve been able to study.”

“It’s not your fault at all.” She protested.

“It’s no one’s fault, just cooperate with me okay?”

“Wow, I never knew Lee Donghae would do something like this.” She mused, giving a teasing glance to the other.

“Shut up, be thankful that I’m doing this for you.”

“…Uhuh.”

“Anyways, here’s the catch. It’s multiple choice, three options, isn’t it? Well, if the answer is A then I’ll say Apple, if B I’ll utter Banana and if it’s C I’ll say Cake. Get it?” He said, looking seriously at Hyukjae. She, on the other hand, couldn’t help but let out a laugh. “Stupid, that’s too obvious!”

“Well, why don’t you suggest something?”

“Okay, let’s see. If the answer is A, say ‘Perfection’. If it’s B, say ‘Me’ and if it’s C, say ‘Super Girl’. Understand?”

“You know, I don’t know whether I should laugh at your choice of codenames or laugh because of how you looked right now while thinking of it.” Donghae chuckled. “Don’t worry, I’ll help you pass Trigonometry.”

Suddenly, Donghae caught yet again the familiar scent of his young professor nearby. His heart stopped, afraid that their plan was being discovered. He slowly looked behind him and he let out a big sigh of relief when he saw that it wasn’t his Trigonometry teacher but their Chemistry professor.

“Miss Lee!” Hyukjae excitedly exclaimed, waving at the young lady whose hair was a little disheveled, as if she had struggled between books toppling over her.

“Oh, Hyukjae, Donghae. Shouldn’t you two be at class already, it’s examination time.” She said, glancing at her pink wristwatch.

“We were just about to leave, actually. I was tutoring Hyukjae here in Trigonometry.” Donghae said pointing towards Hyukjae who nodded in agreement.

“By the way Miss Lee, would you like to use my compact mirror? Your lipstick is smudged.” Hyukjae said as she pointed at their Chemistry teacher’s lips.

“It is? Oh my.” She worriedly exclaimed as she dabbed her handkerchief on her lips, attempting to clean off the makeup. “I got to run, good luck on your tests!” She said. Hyukjae waved in goodbye before gathering her things on the table. Donghae, on the other hand, was looking at a different direction where he caught sight of unkempt hair from the teacher’s area. A smirk creeps on his lips.

“Hey, what are you smirking there for? Let’s go, we’re going to be late!” Hyukjae said as she attempted to pull Donghae.

“No worries, our professor isn’t even there yet.”

When the two of them entered the classroom, they spotted their classmates casually seated on their own seats, still in the midst of having last-minute reviews for their test. Donghae led Hyukjae to sit on the chair beside him, to make their plan work better.

“Snap your fingers when you’re at that part already.” He reminded.

It wasn’t long until Mr. Cho entered the classroom. When the final bell rang, he had instructed the students to get their writing materials as the test was starting. He distributed the questionnaires by column and gave a good luck to his students.

When Hyukjae received her copy of the questionnaire, she felt relieved to know that the test looked relatively easy, the topic that appeared were similar to those that Donghae had taught her. For a time interval of forty-five minutes of answering the test, the only audible sound was coming from the scratching of pencil lead and ballpoint pen against paper as the students solved the test.

As she turned the questionnaire on the last page, she saw what she had been fearing. She looked around before she snapped her fingers, trying to catch Donghae’s attention.

“Perfection.” She heard Donghae whisper and immediately, she wrote a letter ‘A’ on number twenty-six.

“Me. Perfection” He went on, and at the same time, she did too, writing the corresponding letters to her answer sheet in respective order. She nodded slightly, signaling him to go on.

“Super Girl. Perfection.” She didn’t even bother to look at her paper, she just wrote the answer. Unbeknownst to her, as she was struggling during the exam, Donghae was staring at her, amused at her variety of facial expressions. Now wasn’t an exception; he realized that he had been looking at her who was looking back. He smiled.

“My love.” As the words went out of his mouth, Hyukjae had failed to realize what it actually meant, mistaking it for another one of their codenames. She paused for a while, realizing that all the blanks in her answer sweet had been filled and that it wasn’t part of their list at all. It wasn’t until Mr. Cho had called for the passing of papers until what Donghae said made sense to her.

She looked back at the latter; her cheeks burning up whilst he simply smiled at her and said, “What?”

“What was that supposed to mean? T-That’s not even part of the codenames. Seriously, Hae, ‘My Love’?” She tried to laugh it off, fanning herself in the process in attempt to get rid of the red tinge on her cheeks which made her more obvious.

“It is, to me.”

“Oh yeah, then what does ‘My Love’ refer to in the multiple choice test? As far as I know, there are only three items - A, B and C.” She defended.

“Now that’s where you’re mistaken. There’s another option, it might not just be in the test in particular.”

“What letter would ‘My Love’ be then? I swear, Hae, if this is one of your tricks again then I am-”

“If you must know, ‘My Love’ corresponds to ‘U’. Does that make sense to you now?” Donghae smirked, grabbing his bag as he made his way towards the exit. He stopped before he went out and looked back to Hyukjae who was still fazed on the spot. “Hey, U coming or not?” He teased.

“Lee Donghae!” She exclaimed, swiftly bringing her things with her as she caught up with the other guy.
