Jinki wonders, Kibum tells him exactly why.

he's like seashells by the seashore

Jinki wonders why of all people, the person sitting beside him under the setting sun chose to be with him. It wasn’t that he was doubting, nor was he dissatisfied with the choice; he was merely stunned. Who would’ve thought right, someone like him over those who are obviously better than he was? Unexpected. Truly unsought for.

He watched his companion who was looking from afar, enjoying the beautiful view the sunset offered while at the same time, playing with seashells he had found while taking a stroll on the shores. The light wasn’t so dim nor was it too bright, it was just right for himself to enjoy the beauty that was sitting beside him. The sun was setting, the night was coming; people were starting to gather their things as they prepared to go back into their respective rooms. From one side there was a family packing up their beach gear, on another side there was a group of friends who were offering each other food. Whilst the whole world around them was in the move, two figures were sitting on the shore, with no words being exchanged between the two of them.

“Is there something bothering you?” A voice breaks through his reverie, making him look at the person beside him with a surprised expression.

“Huh?” He manages to respond.

“I asked if there was something bothering you; you seem fazed.” He reached out to brush away the stray hair that was dangling over Jinki’s head before staring at him with concern, trying to guess what was troubling him.

“I- There’s nothing that’s really bothering me, it’s just that until now I’m still…” He was cut off when he felt a finger pressed against his lips. “Kibum?”

“Is it about that again?” He removes his finger from Jinki’s lips and leans back with his hands supporting him, looking far at the distance of the setting sun. “The sunset’s so pretty… why don’t you just think about that instead?”

“Funny how the sunset reminds me so much of you that I end up thinking about the thing that has been bothering the back of my mind.” He scooted over towards Kibum and lied down, feeling the moderately heated sand beneath him as well as the little rocks that were endowed on it.

“Shut up, flattering me doesn’t do you any good.” Kibum quickly retorted, turning his head to one side to hide the threatening blush on his cheeks. It’s not that he wasn’t used to the compliments, he wasn’t used to receiving it from Jinki. And god knows that that guy rarely complimented anyone. Sweet talk? Oh was he horrible at that too.

“Well if it makes you smile like that then why not, right?” He chuckled as Kibum playfully hit him on the shoulder. He steals one look at Kibum’s flattered expression before looking back up the sky and sighing.

“How did I come to deserve someone like you, I wonder?” He drawls out. “As far as I remember I used to only admire you from a far while you shone through the crowd…”

“Jinki…”

Jinki sits up and looks at Kibum. “I don’t know, sometimes I can’t help but wonder, how did you come to like me? I mean, words cannot explain how elated I am to be with you right now but in the back of my mind I still can’t help but think about it. How? Why? Questions like that seem to pop up in my mind everytime.” He pauses. “Maybe it’s because the feeling is still overwhelming for me? I-I really don’t understand it myself. All I know is that you’ve completely driven me off the road.”

Kibum glances at Jinki endearingly before giggling to himself. “You’re so cute.” He mumbles before reaching out to pinch Jinki’s cheeks. “What’s there not to like about you?” He adds.

“I was actually being serious here…” Jinki mutters under his breath, trying to avoid Kibum’s gaze. He feels like he could shrink in that gaze.

“Well, I was being serious as well.”

“So… why? I don’t really see anything extra-special about me. I’m…” He scoops up an amount of sand with his hands and lets it penetrate through the spaces between his fingers. “…like sand. Plain and so alike with others, nothing special at all.”

“It’s not my fault that you view yourself like that; you’re more than what you think.” Kibum plays with the seashells with his hand, observing the different designs and shapes of the shells. Jinki observes him as he does this, he moves forward and grabs one piece from Kibum’s hands and holds it up.

“While you, you’re like this beautiful seashell, so unique and unlike the others. You stand out, do you know that?”

“I’m perfectly aware of that but you do know that that’s all it’s going to be - a seashell. For what purpose does it serve other than attracting others with its beauty?”

“Now that you say that… maybe you aren’t really like a seashell after all because you’re so much better.” Jinki plays with the seashell with his hand and looks a far. There was a moment of silence until Kibum speaks up.

“You say that to me yet you can’t even say it to yourself? Let me tell you why I chose you. Although words alone aren’t enough, I hope you’ll understand why.” Kibum scoops an amount of fine sand with his hand and gently taps it over Jinki’s face, caressing it at the same time. “Can you feel that?”

“Yeah.”

“How does it feel then?”

“It feels soft, as if I could just lay here in comfort all day and not be bothered by anything else.”

“Well, that’s exactly how you make me feel. Look around you, there’s so much sand yet so little seashells. Maybe it wasn’t what you think I was looking for in a person that I was actually opting for. Maybe, all I needed was someone who I knew I could be relaxed with and no trouble finding whenever I needed him to be by my side?” A slight tear escapes Kibum’s eye as he tries to laugh to suppress the further tears that’s overwhelming him. “Maybe I just needed someone like you…?”

“Kibum… I-I’m sorry I shouldn’t have-” Jinki moves closer and wipes the tear off of Kibum’s face with his thumb.

“Yeah, you really shouldn’t have. The next time you do I’m going to scratch seashells on your face, let’s see what you’ll think.”
