“I fucking trusted him, you know?” He sighs for the umpteenth time, staring into intangible air while taping his fingers on the wooden desk. It was evident that he was just crying not so long ago, the dried up tears were still seen on his complexion.
Taemin scoffs at Kibum’s current state. “Seriously, Kibum, you have to get over that guy - he doesn’t deserve you. No one who plans to break somebody’s heart deserves them and well, that guy isn’t an exception. So why don’t you get your ass up and cheer up. There’s a lot of fish in the sea, as saying goes.”
“But he was my first love.” He tries to defend himself but to no avail, Taemin manages to counter him.
“Correction, he wasn’t your first love. You were obviously infatuated with him - or the idea of him, at least. And mind you, there’s a line between infatuation and love and babe, you ain’t crossing the line yet.”
“Ugh. I just… I don’t know, maybe it’s because he was my first serious relationship? Or at least I thought it was serious. I was stupid to think that I’d be his only one. What am I even saying.” Kibum rubs his temples as he lets out another sigh.
Taemin who looks sympathetic for his friend, goes near to him and rubs the small of his back. “It’s alright, time will come for the right one Kibum. Just, don’t give up on trying to find it.”
“Question is, will I ever find it? Because as far as I know my ‘ex’ boyfriend just dumped me for a total ugly skank. Does that mean I’m as ugly as a whatever-the-ugliest-thing-in-the-world-is? Like what the hell was wrong with h-him.”
A hand reaches for Taemin’s shoulder which made the latter turn around - only to find out that it was his lover, Minho wanted his attention. He speaks, gaze shifting from his lover to Kibum. “Let him mope as he wants, he’ll get over it soon. It’s the first break up he experienced, everyone’s bound to feel as he is.”
“I didn’t feel that way yet though so I really can’t tell.”
“Isn’t that because you haven’t had your first break up yet? To which may I add will never happen, by the way.” A small smirk appears on Minho’s features as he waits for Taemin to get the meaning behind his words. It only took a second or two before Taemin was swooned, for the lack of better word.
Kibum, who was watching the display, only sulked further. “Seeing couples like you make me feel sick, really. Hello, someone bitching over a failed love life here and you two go into your own world.” He makes a smug expression as he narrows his eyes at the two. The two, aware of Kibum’s menacing (well, what else would you describe it as) stare broke apart.
Second later, someone bursts in from the door gleefully and proud with four tickets in hand, raising the curiosity of the three other occupants of the room. (“Oh, Jinki” Taemin says as recognition.)
“Taemin, Minho, help me tie up Key. We’re going somewhere.” Despite Kibum’s shocked expression, Taemin and Minho follows Jinki’s orders.
“Where the fuck are you taking me, Lee Jinki” Kibum protests as he looks at Jinki for answers; the latter however feigns ignorance and acts as if the other hadn’t spoken at all. He looks back at the other two who was busy fixing Kibum. “On second thought, cover his mouth too.” If his jaw could ever drop to the floor like those in characters in anime then maybe Kibum’s would’ve been at the floor by now.
//
“Does it even occur to you that you brought me to an ice skating rink?” Kibum says as he looks around at the vast surrounding of the indoor ice skating rink. The two were left alone when Taemin and Minho decided to part ways with them; “We’ll give you guys some space” Minho said before he and Taemin made a detour into the other side of the rink.
“Uh, yes?”
“And does it also occur to you that I have no ability to skate, let alone stand on ice in skates?”
“I know you can’t skate-”
“Then why bring me here then?” He cuts of Jinki before the latter could even explain. Instead of responding, Jinki pulls Kibum to the counter and asks for skates that was their size. After receiving the skates from the guy at the counter, Jinki hands him the skates. “I’m going to teach you how, in exchange for having a talk with me.”
“What even…”
“Just comply with it, yeah? Not like anything’s going to happen. Oh wait, if you don’t I’m going to leave you in the middle of the rink and let you die of hypothermia.”
“You’re fucking kidding me.” He says as his arms unfold and he places them on his hips. Jinki takes a look at Kibum’s current appearance and couldn’t help but let out a heartful laugh.
“Of course I’m not. The temperature is in negative Celsius, you’re totally going to freeze to death if I leave you there.” He pauses as he looks at Kibum’s fear-stricken face. “Oh wait, slash that, I bet you’ll die of embarrassment before you die of hypothermia.”
“Geez, Jinki, why the hell are you like that.”
“Because I am? Last thing I know, I’ve always been like this.”
“I give up, I’m not in the mood to argue with you.”
Jinki leads Kibum to a bench where he helps the latter, who wasn’t familiar with how things went, tie his skates in the most strategic and comfortable manner. As soon as he finished tying the laces, he checks up whether it was too tight or not. Patting Kibum’s legs he says, “Are the skates put on too tight?”
“Not exactly. Is this how it’s supposed to go?”
Jinki makes his way into the rink and reaches out a hand for Kibum to hold on to him. The other one, however was a little hesitant in stepping onto the ice. It wasn’t because he was afraid that the ice would crack but because he didn’t want to embarrass himself by slipping in front of a big audience. He wasn’t as frightened as he initially thought, he was holding on to Jinki’s hand as the other helps him balance himself (which he was having a hard time doing, by the way).
“You shouldn’t be afraid to let go of the railings, Kibum. Just because they are there to guide you doesn’t mean you’ll have to rely on them the whole time.” Kibum holds on tighter onto Jinki’s hand whilst still holding on the railing, desperately trying to stand up still while in the skates.
“Do you honestly want me to fall down? Because these skates - I just can’t.”
“What happened to the Kibum that we knew, you know, that one who doesn’t backs down when a challenge is faced?”
“I wonder.”
“For crying out loud, Kibum you can’t be stubborn now. Just, let go of the railing will you? You won’t learn how to skate unless you decide to let go.” That guy is past, you have to let go of him or else you’ll never learn to love again. “Trust me, I’ll hold on to you. I’ll teach you how to skate, it’s not something you should be afraid of.”
Kibum lets go of the railing, despite still having a feeling of fright in him. “Fine, there you have it.”
He was expecting to hold on to Jinki but then he realized that the moment they reached the middle of the rink, Jinki had let go of him, leaving him with nothing to hold on. There was a mist of visible cold air surrounding him that made it look like he was alone - yes, he could hear voices from other people but his problem was, he couldn’t quite see them. Especially the one who’s supposedly the one guiding him. He panicked at the realization and wobbled, landing butt-first on the cold ice.
Having expected from one who has no experience, Kibum had a hard time getting himself together and standing up on the ice. He looks around, only to see Jinki standing behind him with an amused expression.
“What’s up with the ‘I’ll hold on to you’, you freaking let go of me!” Kibum bites his lips in both frustration and chill as he was at the same time, sitting and freezing his butt off on ice.
“That’s just to teach you that you shouldn’t keep your guard down. There are people you trust but ends up betraying you that’s why you should always be cautious. It’s cold isn’t it? It’s like an impact when realizing something you have done wrong, regrets too.”
He goes to where Kibum was and pulls him up, “But see, I’m not like that. Here I am helping you to stand up. You alright?” He helps the latter dust off the ice that stuck on his jeans.
“So you see, when skating, you should be cautious and free of worry at the same time. Cautious of your actions because one wrong move and you’d end up falling; you wouldn’t want that, right? And also, you should brush off your worries, it’s not going to help you move freely in the ice.” He slowly lets go of Kibum, helping him to balance his posture on the skates.
“Stay still, here I’ll demonstrate to you how.”
Jinki skates on the ice freely and gracefully as if he was just playing around. Kibum is at awe on how the other could skate like that. Jinki calls his attention, “See? Just keep on gliding but don’t glide too fast, remember to control yourself because if not then you’d end up either losing your balance and falling or you’d smack straight onto the walls of the rink. There are boundaries that you just can’t pass.”Just like how you shouldn’t love too much and lose yourself, there are boundaries in love which one has to keep in mind of. However, said boundaries shouldn’t keep one from loving - treat it as something that would help improve what’s there already.
Jinki stops from skating and goes over to where Kibum, who was staring in amazement at the other’s smooth movements, was. He offers a hand to Kibum whereas the other just stares at the hand that was in front of him. “Come, Kibum. Stay out of your comfort zone, move forward and skate with me. It’s not that hard, promise. I’ll hold on to you as long as you want - as long as you learn how to skate.”
Kibum, on the other hand, was just staring at Jinki’s extended hand, trying to comprehend what the other was saying. He looks up to see the other giving him a really warm smile, despite the cold atmosphere they were currently at. It was then that the meaning behind Jinki’s words make an impact on him. “You sure you could do that? I seriously know nothing about ice skating.”
The other lets out a soft chuckle, “Of course I am, I put myself in this and there’s no turning back - not that I thought of turning back in the first place.”
Kibum smiles at what the latter said and holds onto Jinki’s hand. “Good.”
“So are you ready?”
“Yeah, I am.”
And so, Jinki gives all his efforts in teaching Kibum how to skate. It wasn’t easy, but together it was worth learning. Isn’t that how love is too? You don’t just fall in love in a snap, it’s a process. You may think that you have fallen in love but some speculations go wrong and ends up not being as you thought of in the first place. This is why love is special, it grows onto you with efforts coming from both sides. Why? Because despite the cold breeze that phases your way, together you can skate through all the problems - love has its way.
